Описание:
First published in 1986, this title critiques the canonical view of Milton as an isolated Great Man, and reassesses the impact of the Puritan Revolution on two of his major works: the "Areopagitica" and "Paradise Lost." The study focuses on the emergence of a discreet ethical framework of thought within the dominant theological code of these two works, arguing that this framework - integral to Protestantism - is also crucial to the construction of subjectivity under capitalism. Through an analysis of the rhetorical strategies of the "Areopagitica" and the generic composition of "Paradise Lost," Christopher Kendrick demonstrates that Milton's 'individualism' both affirms the success of the Puritan Revolution and also exposes the contradictions between the capitalist subject's ethical freedom and the world of necessity of which that freedom is part.
Описание: First published in 1986, this title examines a set of English Renaissance texts by Shakespeare, Spenser, Herbert, Marvell and Milton, within the theoretic framework of postmodern thought. Following an opening chapter that argues for the value of this conjunction as a way of understanding literary history, subsequent chapters draw upon Jacques Derrida’s deconstruction of photocentrism and Jacques Lacan’s analysis of the agency of the letter to offer fully theorized readings. Throughout, there is a sustained concern with the transformations of such Ovidian figures as Narcissus and Echo, Perseus and Medusa, Orpheus and Eurydice, and with the echo effects of Virgilian pastoral, as paradigms for the interplay of voice and writing.

Описание:
Dr. Roper describes the mode of many of Dryden's original poems by redefining the royalism that provides the matter of some works and the metaphoric vocabulary of others. Dryden's royalism is seen both as an identifiable political attitude and a way of apprehending public life that again and again relates superficially non-political matters to the standards and assumptions of politics in order to determine their public significance.
Dryden's Poetic Kingdoms, first published in 1965, principally through readings of ten poems, comes to the conclusion that Dryden's poems are most successful when they work to create a meaningful analogy between such topics as literature and politics or between the constitution of England and the constitution of Rome, the Garden of Eden, or Israel under David.
Описание: First published in 1926, this title presents the great artistic and literary innovations of the Romantic movement according to an often overlooked and unacknowledged definition of `Romanticism`, which is of particular relevance in the consideration of the English Romantic spirit: pertaining to the style of the Christian and popular literature of the Middle Ages.
Автор: Rogers Pat Название: Grub Street (Routledge Revivals): Studies in a Subculture ISBN: 1138024813 ISBN-13(EAN): 9781138024816 Издательство: Taylor&Francis Рейтинг: Цена: 7042.00 р. Наличие на складе: Есть у поставщика Поставка под заказ.
Описание: First published in 1972, this is the first detailed study of the milieu of the eighteenth-century literary hack and its significance in Augustan literature. Although the modern term ‘Grub Street’ has declined into vague metaphor, for the Augustan satirists it embodied not only an actual place but an emphatic lifestyle. Pat Rogers shows that the major satirists – Pope, Swift and Fielding – built a potent fiction surrounding the real circumstances in which the scribblers lived, and the importance of this aspect of their writing. The author first locates the original Grub Street, in what is now the Barbican, and then presents a detailed topographical tour of the surrounding area. With detailed studies of a number of key authors, as well as the modern and metaphorical development of the term ‘Grub Street’, this book offers comprehensive insight into the nature of Augustan literature and the social conditions and concerns that inspired it.

Описание: In this concise introduction to Pope’s life and work, first published in 1975, the poet’s highly successful career as a man of letters is seen against the background of the Augustan age as a whole. Pat Rogers begins by examining the relationship of the eighteenth-century writer to his audience, and discusses the role of style and versification in this. The book covers the whole of Pope’s work and includes not only the translations of Homer and such minor poems as The Temple of Fame, but also the prose, both drama and correspondence. Based on extensive research, this book will provide literature students with a greater appreciation and understanding of Pope’s verse and the ways in which he addressed his eighteenth-century context in his work.
