Описание: War through high passes to Tibet Following the subjugation of the Punjab, the kingdom of the Sikhs, in the middle years of the 19th century the British Empire effectively controlled the Indian sub-continent. Although the Indian Mutiny of 1857 temporarily disrupted the peaceful consolidation of Britain's 'jewel in the crown, ' the borders of its Indian domain were not seriously threatened. As the century progressed the principal concern of the British was to hold all they had won. The greatest threat to this was the might of the Russian Empire and it was clear that, if it came, this threat would come via the Northern passes through Afghanistan or the smaller states in the east. So the 'The Great Game' began with each side vying for influence and with the British constantly engaged in wars or expeditions along the troubled and hostile border. All attempts to close the avenue of potential invasion through Tibet failed as a consequence of Tibetan unwillingness to put itself under British influence and so in 1903 Curzon initiated an invasion to establish a diplomatic mission. What followed was a particularly reprehensible example of imperial bullying as the most significant martial nation in the world took on a peaceful and militarily inept people armed with weapons a hundred years out of date. This book, written by one of its British officers, focuses less on the politics of the affair than on the experiences of the mounted infantry of the Indian Army. For those interested in the colonial campaigns of the later period this is an excellent first hand account. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Описание: Riflemen on horseback The latter part of the 19th century returned to service a type of soldier who could trace his antecedents to the first dragoons-mounted men who would also fought on foot. Cavalry had specific roles to play, but in theatres of war involving huge distances or against fast moving, mobile and especially mounted enemies the requirement for the horse mounted infantryman ready to meet these challenges had become paramount. Never was the necessity for mounted infantry more apparent than upon the veldt of South Africa and against the flexible mounted commandos of the Boers. Several British infantry regiments included mounted contingents and the author of this book fought with one of the most highly regarded-the Kings Royal Rifles. There were few conflicts where the Rifles were not called upon to serve that did not see them involved in the thick of the action and the Boer War was no exception. All first hand accounts are invaluable source works, but in Crum the reader is fortunate to have a narrator who was involved in fierce close quarters skirmishing throughout most of his service. His descriptions of the fighting in which he and his riflemen were involved makes gripping reading. This Leonaur edition has been enhanced by the inclusion of several contemporary illustrations of the mounted infantry-and their close service comrades the Hussars-on campaign during the conflict. All those interested in the regiments, who once clad in green fought in front of Wellington's redcoats, will find much to engage them in this book. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Описание: Lincoln's Cavalrymen describes the organizational, administrative, and operational history of the mounted arm of -Mr. Lincoln's Army.- Historian Edward G. Longacre consulted at least fifty manuscript collections pertaining to general officers of cavalry, as well as the unpublished letters and diaries of more than 450 officers and enlisted men, representing almost every mounted unit in the Army of the Potomac. The result is the most comprehensive history of the Union cavalry to date. It covers the gamut of cavalry life--not only field operations but also the recruiting, organizing, mounting, remounting, equipping, training, tactical instruction, and war-long support of this critical branch of the nineteenthcentury army. The book vividly portrays the cavalry's most influential commanders and assesses the depth and quality of its leadership. Longacre also seeks to place the cavalry in the context of the army and the war effort as a whole.
Описание: Since the first histories of the Civil War appeared after Appomattox, the cavalry has received intermittent, uneven, and even romanticized coverage. Historian Edward G. Longacre has corrected this oversight. Lee's Cavalrymen, not only details the organizational and operational history of the mounted arm of the Army of Northern Virginia but also examines the personal experiences of officers and men. Longacre chronicles the salient characteristics of the regiments, brigades, and divisions, and explores the evolution of cavalry leadership, with emphasis on the personalities, interpersonal relationships, and operational styles of J. E. B. Stuart, Wade Hampton, Fitzhugh Lee, and other influential commanders. He has consulted dozens of collections of letters, diaries, and memoirs by cavalrymen of all ranks, and his careful study of North Carolina, Virginia, and Georgia newspapers unearthed rare cavalry-specific dispatches. Longacre also makes extensive use of an unpublished memoir of Gen. Wade Hampton, Stuart's second-in-command. A provocative analysis of the mounted army's organization, leadership, and tactics, Lee's Cavalrymen is a study that no Civil War enthusiast will want to miss.
Описание: Fighting and policing on the veldt and in the bush In parts of the globe during the nineteenth century, particularly those quarters incrementally being coloured red by the growth of the British Empire, many new police forces were formed and their services were as varied as their locations and the native peoples who populated them dictated. Sometimes that meant the activities of the force were virtually military for long periods of time and they were always certainly far removed from the duties of a 'Bobby' of the home country in every way. Never was this more true than for the subject of this book, 'The Mounted Police of Natal.' Formed in 1874 in South Africa it came into being at a time of violence and unrest with which it was involved until the eve of the Great War. Wars and uprisings among the Kaffir tribes of the Cape were raging long before the creation of the NMP, but, naturally, they immediately became embroiled. Everyone who knows of the period is aware of how in 1879 war against the Zulu nation broke out and shook the security of the colony to the core. Brave men of the NMP fought against and died under the assegais of the Zulu impis at Isandlwhana and in many other bloody engagements related in these pages. This riveting account goes on to describe the part played by the force in two Boer Wars, various tribal uprisings, the Zulu Rebellion of 1906 as well as the activities of lone policemen whose 'beat' covered hundreds of square miles and who had to deal with smugglers, witchcraft and murders in remote corners of the empire. This is a highly readable and comprehensive work and is recommended. Available in softcover and hardcover with dustjacket for collectors.
