Описание:

A university education has long been seen as the gateway to upward social mobility for individuals from lower socio-economic backgrounds, and as a way of reproducing social advantage for the better off. With the number of young people from the very highest socio-economic groups entering university in the UK having effectively been at saturation point for several decades, the expansion witnessed in participation rates over the last few decades has largely been achieved by a modest broadening of the base of the undergraduate population in terms of both social class and ethnic diversity.

However, a growing body of evidence exists in the continuation of unequal graduate outcomes. This can be seen in terms of employment trajectories in the UK. The issue of just who enjoys access to which university, and the experiences and outcomes of graduates from different institutions remain central to questions of social justice, notably higher educations contribution to social mobility and to the reproduction of social inequality.

This collection of contemporary original writings explores these issues in a range of specific contexts, and through employing a range of theoretical and methodological approaches. The relationship between higher education and social mobility has probably never been under closer scrutiny. This volume will appeal to academics, policy makers, and commentators alike. Higher Education and Social Inequalities is an important contribution to the public and academic debate.

Democratizing Inequalities: Dilemmas of the New Public Participation

Описание:

Opportunities to “have your say,” “get involved,” and “join the
conversation” are everywhere in public life. From crowdsourcing and town hall
meetings to government experiments with social media, participatory politics increasingly
seem like a revolutionary antidote to the decline of civic engagement and the
thinning of the contemporary public sphere. Many argue that, with new
technologies, flexible organizational cultures, and a supportive policymaking
context, we now hold the keys to large-scale democratic revitalization.

Democratizing Inequalities shows that the equation may not be so
simple. Modern societies face a variety of structural problems that limit
potentials for true democratization, as well as vast inequalities in political
action and voice that are not easily resolved by participatory solutions. Popular
participation may even reinforce elite power in unexpected ways. Resisting an
oversimplified account of participation as empowerment, this collection of
essays brings together a diverse range of leading scholars to reveal surprising
insights into how dilemmas of the new public participation play out in politics
and organizations. Through investigations including fights over the
authenticity of business-sponsored public participation, the surge of the Tea
Party, the role of corporations in electoral campaigns, and participatory
budgeting practices in Brazil, Democratizing
Inequalities seeks to refresh our understanding of public participation and
trace the reshaping of authority in today’s political environment.

It also seeks to bridge a gap between affect theory and empirical social research by providing ideas and inspiration of how to work with affect in research practice.

Presenting cutting-edge empirical studies on affect and intimate relationships, the collection

- introduces alternative and novel ways of conceptualizing the workings of affect in intimate relationships

- provides tools for tackling the subtle ways in which affectivity connects with power relations in intimate relations

- develops innovative methodologies that provide better access to affect as an embodied experience

A fascinating contribution to the interdisciplinary field of affect studies, Affective Inequalities in Intimate Relationships will appeal to advanced undergraduates and postgraduates interested in fields such as gender studies, queer studies and cultural studies.

Описание:

Bringing together the most recent empirical evidence and the latest theoretical debates, this fully revised new edition gets to grips with a broad range of inequalities in people's lives. Examining social class, gender, ethnicity, disability and migration status, it demonstrates how these play out in relation to education, health, poverty, neighbourhood and housing and how they cumulate across the life course. Richly illustrated with figures and concrete examples showing the distribution of life chances across social groups, the book demonstrates how people's lives are structured by inequalities across multiple dimensions.

Comprehensive topical chapters are framed by an exploration of the meaning and interpretation of inequalities and a discussion highlighting the important intersections between them. With new chapters on disability and international migration, this updated edition continues to provide a wide-ranging but detailed and theoretically sophisticated account of contemporary inequalities that will be invaluable to undergraduate and masters students alike.

Extreme Inequalities in Contemporary Capitalism

Описание: This book explores the mechanisms by which top incomes are achieved through work in today’s advanced economies and asks to what extent current extreme inequalities are compatible with widely held values of social justice. Reflecting on the heterogeneity of the working rich, the authors argue that very high earnings often result not from heightened competition induced by globalization but rather from a lack of competition, or at best deficient competition. It is proposed that such incomes cannot be justified in terms of efficiency or merit and do not generate positive trickle-down effects with benefits for all of society; rather, extreme inequalities in earnings risk jeopardizing equality of opportunity. The book concludes by offering a wide array of innovative policy prescriptions that are not punitive in intent and are not merely directed toward income redistribution. Readers will find the book to be a fascinating source of insights into the subject of the working rich, which remains largely unexplored within both economics and ethics.
