Описание:

After publication of Island of Knowledge Sydney Banks and Linda Quiring began work on a second book, Beyond Beliefs. While the first book detailed Lindas experience and life changes after becoming a student of Syds, the following years saw dramatic change on Salt Spring Island. Sydney Banks initial and revelatory experience brought scores of young and idealistic spiritual seekers to the Island to hear Syds teachings and become his students. As his reputation spread, mainstream people came to join what was to become a fairly large following of students. As word spread further of the amazing events taking place, psychologists and other professionals came to experience firsthand the healing effect Syds message had on others. Banks came to believe that his message could change psychology forever. In Beyond Beliefs Syd speaks with psychologists, outlining his radical ideas about the mind and its dysfunction. Some of them are dismissive of this ordinary, uneducated Scottish mans wisdom; others are mesmerized, become ardent life-long students and carry his message into their practices. Beyond Beliefs contains the original teachings Sydney Banks shared with these mental health professionals and others.

Описание:

Encounters with an Enlightened Man reveals Linda Quiring's experience in a mental institution where she was told she would need to be on medication and receive periodic shock treatments for the rest of her life. Soon, her personal spiritual journey led her and her husband Bill to move to Saltspring Island in early 1974. Her search for that 'guru who appears the moment a student is ready' led to the door of Sydney Banks, who had also just moved to the Island after having an enlightenment experience. At their first fortuitous meeting, Syd articulated a desire to write about his very recent experience, and suggested that Linda, an avid reader and writer, work with him. After listening to Syd she became 'cured' without any further medication or treatments.
The next year saw more students appear, and within five years, hundreds of students had moved to the Island to follow this quiet man and his startling revelations into the nature of life. With Island of Knowledge selling thousands of books, and another on the way, Syd's path led to the wider world, where he would write books, work with psychologists and other professionals and disseminate his teachings. Linda's journey however, led to settling into a normal life on a small farm, where she and Bill raised their son Gary, made artisan soaps for a living, and kept chickens and bees.
A heartfelt desire to write, and surprised by the outflow of love and interest in those times, Linda was encouraged to write about "The Early Days." Still friends after four decades with other very early students, she included their stories as well, making for an enthralling look into the beginnings of a now worldwide movement in higher consciousness as experienced and taught by Sydney Banks.

Описание:

In 1974 Linda Quiring moved to Salt Spring Island, British Columbia to 'find' herself. Salt Spring Island was one of the centers for the counter-culture movement in Canada; home to hippies and back-to-the-landers. Soon, Linda encountered an enlightened man, Sydney Banks, and became his first student.
Together they wrote Island of Knowledge under Linda's authorship, detailing Syd's teachings and the profound changes those listening experienced in their lives, health and relationships.
Sydney Banks would ultimately become renowned for his revelation of The Three Principles inherent in those teachings. Linda and Syd remained friends until his passing in 2009.
Before his death, Syd approached Linda about the possibility of getting Island of Knowledge republished. However, embarrassed by the 'hippy' jargon of the 1970's, Syd asked that references to the times be changed.
In deciding what should be left in, what changed, and what taken out, Linda and her publisher realized the book was in fact an important historical account of an amazing time and place and that to tamper with the integrity of the book would be a great disservice, thus it is republished exactly as is.

Описание: To metaphorize the world as a theatre has been a common procedure since antiquity, but the use of this trope became particularly prominent and pregnant in early modern times, especially in England. Old and new applications of the “theatrum mundi” topos pervaded discourses, often allegorizing the deceitfulness and impermanence of this world as well as the futility of earthly strife. It was frequently woven into arguments against worldly amusements such as the stage: Commercial theatre was declared an undesirable competitor of God’s well-ordered world drama. Early modern dramatists often reacted to this development by appropriating the metaphor, and in an ingenious twist, some playwrights even appropriated its anti-theatrical impetus: Early modern theatre seemed to discover a denial of its own theatricality at its very core. Drama was found to succeed best when it staged itself as a great unmasking. To investigate the reasons and effects of these developments, the anthology examines the metaphorical uses of theatre in plays, pamphlets, epics, treatises, legal proclamations and other sources.
