Описание:

The Adventures of Billie and Pillie tells the story of two young pelicans living along the Oregon coast with their parents.

While Billie does everything right and follows the family rules, his brother Pillie is very mischievous and is always getting in trouble. In fact, he never seems to learn right from wrong.

From the day these two are hatched, the pelican brothers take on one adventure after another, most of which end up with Pillie breaking all the pelican rules. Even the Oregon Coast Guard becomes involved in a sea-to-air rescue involving, you guessed it, Pillie.

About the Author and Illustrator: An Oregon native, Christopher J. Evans taught in Roseburg, Oregon, for thirteen years before teaching overseas for the next twenty-five years. A retired biology/chemistry teacher, he currently lives in a small town on the Oregon coast, with his house a five-minute walk to the beach. This is his first book about Billie and Pillie; however, his children and grandchildren grew up listening to these pelican stories. He volunteers at the Oregon Coast Aquarium, and also enjoys hiking with his dogs along the beach and through the coastal forests.

Susan Perrigot is a teacher, artist, and illustrator who lives in central Oregon. She shares her home with three cats and her backyard with several friendly deer. The author and illustrator met while both were teaching in China.

Описание: A remarkable history of the powerful and influential social gospel movement.

The global crises of child labor, alcoholism and poverty were all brought to our attention through the social gospel movement. Its impact on American society makes it one of the most influential developments in American religious history.

Christopher H. Evans traces the development of the social gospel in American Protestantism, and illustrates how the religious idealism of the movement also rose up within Judaism and Catholicism.

Contrary to the works of previous historians, Evans demonstrates how the presence of the social gospel continued in American culture long after its alleged demise following World War I. Evans reveals the many aspects of the social gospel and their influence on a range of social movements during the twentieth century, culminating with the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s. It also explores the relationship between the liberal social gospel of the early twentieth century and later iterations of social reform in late twentieth century evangelicalism.

The Social Gospel in American Religion considers an impressive array of historical figures including Washington Gladden, Emil Hirsch, Frances Willard, Reverdy Ransom, Walter Rauschenbusch, Stephen Wise, John Ryan, Harry Emerson Fosdick, A.J. Muste, Georgia Harkness, and Benjamin Mays. It demonstrates how these figures contributed to the shape of the social gospel in America, while arguing that the movement's legacy lies in its profound influence on broader traditions of liberal-progressive political reform in American history.

Описание: A little Cat who sleeps all day And never seems to want to play. He just lies around without a care On the warmest bed or the softest chair. But when the sun goes down at the end of the day, The little Cat wakes and slips away. He hurries to a hilltop high, Where he sits beneath the twinkling sky. To watch the stars as they play and chat Means all the world to this little Cat. Returning home at morning's light, Where he sleeps right through until the night. When once again his heart desires, To see the stars...that he so admires.

Описание: To tell the story of America is, in many ways, to tell the story of religion in America. At every point in its history, America was, and still is, religiousaand diversely so. To understand how religion shaped Americas history is to trace the influence of Americas dominant faith tradition, Christianity. But American Christianity, like religion in America, is a wonderfully varied movement. In this comprehensive, eminently readable introduction, Christopher Evans maps the pluralism of American Christianity around its historic center, demonstrating the enduring role of Protestantism despite the wide assortment of distinctly American religious innovation. In Histories of American Christianity , Evans thus narrates the intellectual history, chronicles the story of sectarian divisions, and explores how Christianity became so intertwined with and pervasive in public life. But Evans also shines fresh light on what has been omitted. Through the use of individual stories focusing on the traditionally marginalizedae.g., women, African Americans, and Latino/a descendantsaEvans weaves together a tapestry of American-Christian orthodoxy and tradition over the centuries. What results is a readable and teachable volume, grounded in research and packed with critical reflection that chronicles Americas rich Christian history.
