Описание:

How are girls represented in written and graphic texts, and how do these representations inform our understanding of girlhood? In this volume, contributors examine the girl in the text in order to explore a range of perspectives on girlhood across borders and in relation to their positionality. In literary and transactional texts, girls are presented as heroes who empower themselves and others with lasting effect, as figures of liberating pedagogical practice and educational activism, and as catalysts for discussions of the relationship between desire and ethics. In these varied chapters, a new notion of transnationalism emerges, one rooted not only in the process through which borders between nation-states become more porous, but through which cultural and ethnic imperatives become permeable.

Описание:

How did Jo Ann Barnett--a Methodist girl born and raised in Hueytown, Alabama, during the Great Depression and World War II--come to be Jan Shipps, a renowned non-Mormon historian and scholar of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints? In Jan Shipps: A Social and Intellectual Portrait, authors Gordon Shepherd and Gary Shepherd tell the story of how Shipps not only became an important and trusted authority in a field that was at the time predominantly made up of Mormon men, but also the crucial role she played in legitimizing Mormon Studies as a credible academic field of study.

Описание: One of America’s most compelling First Ladies, Mary Lincoln possessed a unique vantage point on the events of her time, even as her experiences of the constraints of gender roles and the upheaval of the Civil War reflected those of many other women. The story of her life presents a microcosm through which we can understand the complex and dramatic events of the nineteenth century in the United States, including vital issues of gender, war, and the divisions between North and South. The daughter of a southern, slave-holding family, Mary Lincoln had close ties to people on both sides of the war. Her life shows how the North and South were interconnected, even as the country was riven by sectional strife. In this concise narrative, Stacy Pratt McDermott presents an evenhanded account of this complex, intelligent woman and her times. Supported by primary documents and a robust companion website, this biography introduces students to the world of nineteenth-century America, and the firsthand experiences of Americans during the Civil War.

Описание: The Girl with Nine Lives is a true adventure story-a candid personal memoir describing the first eighteen years of the author's life, which began in foster care until she was adopted by a hardworking couple of faith. The book explores the author's experiences growing up on the farm; her struggles learning to walk, run, ride a bike, and the many scrapes (both figurative and literal ) she got into as a daredevil and a dreamer.

Born with a serious balance issue, doctors said Stephanie (or Stacy, in the book) would never walk, and should be relegated to an institution. Being given up for adoption left her feeling discarded and insecure. As she is raised by a loving family, and begins to experience victories, the author learns to see her value in the world, eventually finding her calling as a teacher. Faith has a strong presence in the book; Stacy grows in her faith, and comes to realize that God has a plan for her.

With a childhood so full of amusing, frightening, and unusual adventures and misadventures, it really does seem like a miracle that the author emerged in one piece. Readers will find themselves rooting for young Stacy's success, and at times, her survival ...

Описание: 'Little woman of great courage'-the life of Mary Jemison

Mary Jemison's is a remarkable story. Born in 1743, she was captured by Indians whilst in her teenage years. Her family had emigrated from Ireland and settled on the troubled Pennsylvania frontier in lands controlled by the Iroquois. The Seven Years War broke out and its realisation in the New World, the French and Indian war set the border-lands ablaze. In 1755 a mixed raiding party of Shawnee warriors and Frenchmen captured the Jemison family and an unrelated boy but subsequently killed most of them. Mary was sold to the Senecas and disappeared into the wilderness. Her remarkable story of captivity that gradually led to integration into the life of the Indians of the Eastern woodlands makes vital reading for all those interested in the role of women in the opening up of early America. Jemison eventually elected to live her life as a Seneca despite much subsequent interaction with white settlers. Her descriptions of the part played by the Indian tribes during the Revolutionary War are both unusual and vitally interesting.

Описание:

'Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.' John 14:6

One of Deb's biggest regrets was the time wasted when she lost contact with her family and ran away from home. Time so precious and never to be regained. But it was all in God's plan and in His control. Deb certainly redeemed the time, spending her last few months writing her story so that you may learn from the mistakes she made, but also that you too may know the saving and forgiving love of the Lord Jesus Christ.

If Deb was still here, she would tell you, life is short and there is no time to waste. Deb tells her true story of incredible joys, and unbelievable heartache, intermingled with laughter. Join Deb as she bares her heart, shares joys and pains, telling of the eternal goodness, grace and love of her Saviour.

"It is a great honour to recommend to you this account of our great God at work in the life of one of His children. I have had the great privilege of knowing Deb and witnessing first-hand the moving of God in her heart to bring her to Himself. It was a joy to be a part of her baptism, to see her become Mrs. Deb Cooper and to have the opportunity to be a pastor to her and Mash through times of blessings and challenges. Through the ups and down and many struggles, God used Deb's life; a life yielded to Him even through the valley of the shadow of death, to influence many souls to seek our Saviour. May this encourage each of us to strive to finish strong as our dear sister Deb, 'forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before.' May we seek to leave this world as right with our great God as is humanly possible. It was Deb's desire and prayer that the Lord would use this book to encourage and challenge many to turn their eyes upon the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour." - Pastor Derrick Morlan

The Cost of Being a Girl: Working Teens and the Origins of the Gender Wage Gap

Описание:

The gender wage gap is one of the most persistent problems of labor markets and women’s lives.

Most approaches to explaining the gap focus on adult employment despite the fact that many Americans begin working well before their education is completed. In her critical and compelling new book, The Cost of Being a Girl, Yasemin Besen-Cassino examines the origins of the gender wage gap by looking at the teenage labor force, where comparisons between boys and girls ought to show no difference, but do.

Besen-Cassino’s findings are disturbing. Because of discrimination in the market, most teenage girls who start part-time work as babysitters and in other freelance jobs fail to make the same wages as teenage boys who move into employee-type jobs. The “cost” of being a girl is also psychological; when teenage girls work retail jobs in the apparel industry, they have lower wages and body image issues in the long run.

Through in-depth interviews and surveys with workers and employees, The Cost of Being a Girl puts this alarming social problem—which extends to race and class inequality—in to bold relief. Besen-Cassino emphasizes that early inequalities in the workplace ultimately translate into greater inequalities in the overall labor force.

Описание:

During the war in Sierra Leone (1991–2002), members of various rebel movements kidnapped thousands of girls and women, some of whom came to take an active part in the armed conflict alongside the rebels. In a stunning look at the life of women in wartime, Chris Coulter draws on interviews with more than a hundred women to bring us inside the rebel camps in Sierra Leone. When these girls and women returned to their home villages after the cessation of hostilities, their families and peers viewed them with skepticism and fear, while humanitarian organizations saw them primarily as victims. Neither view was particularly helpful in helping them resume normal lives after the war. Offering lessons for policymakers, practitioners, and activists, Coulter shows how prevailing notions of gender, both in home communities and among NGO workers, led, for instance, to women who had taken part in armed conflict being bypassed in the demilitarization and demobilization processes carried out by the international community in the wake of the war. Many of these women found it extremely difficult to return to their families, and, without institutional support, some were forced to turn to prostitution to eke out a living.Coulter weaves several themes through the work, including the nature of gender roles in war, livelihood options in war and peace, and how war and postwar experiences affect social and kinship relations.
