Описание:

A global history of human rights in a world of nation-states that grant rights to some while denying them to others

Once dominated by vast empires, the world is now divided into close to 200 independent countries with laws and constitutions proclaiming human rights--a transformation that suggests that nations and human rights inevitably developed together. But the reality is far more problematic, as Eric Weitz shows in this compelling global history of the fate of human rights in a world of nation-states.

Through vivid histories drawn from virtually every continent, A World Divided describes how, since the eighteenth century, nationalists have struggled to establish their own states that grant human rights to some people. At the same time, they have excluded others through forced assimilation, ethnic cleansing, or even genocide. From Greek rebels, American settlers, and Brazilian abolitionists in the nineteenth century to anticolonial Africans and Zionists in the twentieth, nationalists have confronted the question, Who has the right to have rights? A World Divided tells these stories in colorful accounts focusing on people who were at the center of events. And it shows that rights are dynamic. Proclaimed originally for propertied white men, rights were quickly demanded by others, including women, American Indians, and black slaves.

A World Divided also explains the origins of many of todays crises, from the existence of more than 65 million refugees and migrants worldwide to the growth of right-wing nationalism. The book argues that only the continual advance of international human rights will move us beyond the quandary of a world divided between those who have rights and those who dont.

Описание:

Just because she's made AARP doesn't mean she's DOA. Take it from sixty-plus Margot Manning. The family vultures are chomping at the bit to grab her considerable fortune, so they petition to become her conservators. But they haven't a clue how strong she still is. Currently, that means solving some highly suspicious deaths.

Feisty Old Ladies is the razor-sharp and riotous crime novel by Cynthia Weitz that shadows one irrepressible senior who finds herself the reluctant resident of Shady Palms life-care center. The captivating socialite may still be the toast of the tony set, but after Margot stumbles in her stilettos and is sent to recuperate at Shady Palms, they just may have her by the Achilles heels.

She counts on support from her handsome Danish beau until he fetches an adorable young lawyer-ostensibly to help. Margot repays him in kind with her own new flirtations.

At Shady Palms, Margot meets other formidable femmes, and when she starts poking into the confounding demises of two pet patients, these gal pals join her in unmasking the culprit. This mystery offers double doses of entertaining antics and a refreshing take on just how fierce and fun life is after age sixty

Описание: Chris Weitz has made a beautiful transition from writing and directing films to novels. The Young World is populated with characters you won't forget and a story as fresh and urgent as Divergent.--James Patterson, #1 NY Times bestselling author of Maximum Ride.
Welcome to New York, a city ruled by teens.

After a mysterious Sickness wipes out the rest of the population, the young survivors assemble into tightly run tribes. Jefferson, the reluctant leader of the Washington Square tribe, and Donna, the girl he's secretly in love with, have carved out a precarious existence among the chaos.
But when a fellow tribe member discovers a clue that may hold the cure for the Sickness, five teens set out on a life-altering road trip, exchanging gunfire with enemy gangs, escaping cults and militias, braving the wilds of the subway--all in order to save humankind.
This first novel from acclaimed film writer/director Chris Weitz is the heart-stopping debut of an action-packed trilogy.

Описание: Shatterzone of Empires is a comprehensive analysis of interethnic relations, coexistence, and violence in Europe's eastern borderlands over the past two centuries. In this vast territory, extending from the Baltic to the Black Sea, four major empires with ethnically and religiously diverse populations encountered each other along often changing and contested borders. Examining this geographically widespread, multicultural region at several levels—local, national, transnational, and empire—and through multiple approaches—social, cultural, political, and economic—this volume offers informed and dispassionate analyses of how the many populations of these borderlands managed to coexist in a previous era and how and why the areas eventually descended into violence. An understanding of this specific region will help readers grasp the preconditions of interethnic coexistence and the causes of ethnic violence and war in many of the world's other borderlands both past and present.
