The book pays particular attention to the continuities and discontinuities in the ways in which atrocity photographs shaped the public perception of Ustasha violence, first in socialist Yugoslavia and later also in successor states, and examines how images were strategically and selectively mobilized to sustain particular political or cultural agendas. In exploring this hitherto neglected aspect of Yugoslav history and visual culture, the book offers important insights into a number of issues of broader contemporary relevance.
