Описание: A historical perspective on the arm's length relationship between the United States and the Palestinian question. The U.S. government and Palestinian leaders have had some form of direct contact for nearly four decades--and cooperation on economic, political, and security issues for the past two-plus decades-but that experience has never led to a genuine bilateral relationship. Blind Spot explains why the two sides have an independent relationship and what this means for American efforts to broker peace between Palestinians and Israelis, and broader U.S. interests in the region. While successive U.S. administrations have recognized the centrality of the Palestinian question, American policymakers continue to treat the Palestinians as an agenda item in the U.S.-Israel relationship or the peace process (and occasionally other regional priorities). Elgindy argues that the United States continues to view the Palestinians and their political aspirations largely through the prism of its special relationship with Israel, as well as other regional parties. Indeed, even official U.S. support for Palestinian statehood stems not from a belief that Palestinians, like all peoples, have an inherent right to self-determination, but from an overriding concern for preserving Israel's character as both a Jewish and democratic state. For their part, Palestinian leaders have consistently misjudged U.S. foreign policy interests while undervaluing the role of domestic politics in shaping U.S. policies toward the region. Both Yasir Arafat and his successor Mahmoud Abbas, have to one degree or another pursued strategies based on the mistaken expectation that Washington would deliver Israel, namely by applying sufficient pressure to compel it ultimately to end its occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip and allow the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.Unless and until U.S. policymakers are prepared to support Palestinian political aspirations for their own sake and on their own terms, there is little hope that the United States can successfully broker an enduring peace agreement. Likewise, only when Palestinian leaders are prepared to exercise self-determination over their own domestic politics will they be able to attain it for their people.

Описание: A six-month New York Times bestseller: "Not only the best Watergate book, but a very good book indeed" (The Sunday Times).

As White House counsel to Richard Nixon, a young John W. Dean was one of the primary players in the Watergate scandal--and ultimately became the government's key witness in the investigations that ended the Nixon presidency. After the scandal subsided, Dean rebuilt his career, first in business and then as a bestselling author and lecturer. But while the events were still fresh in his mind, he wrote this remarkable memoir about the operations of the Nixon White House and the crisis that led to the president's resignation.

Called "fascinating" by Commentary, which noted that "there can be little doubt of [Dean's] memory or his candor," Blind Ambition offers an insider's view of the deceptions and machinations that brought down an administration and changed the American people's view of politics and power. It also contains Dean's own unsparing reflections on the personal demons that drove him to participate in the sordid affair. Upon its original publication, Kirkus Reviews hailed it "the flip side of All the President's Men--a document, a minefield, and prime entertainment."

Today, Dean is a respected and outspoken advocate for transparency and ethics in government, and the bestselling author of such books as The Nixon Defense, Worse Than Watergate, and Conservatives Without Conscience. Here, in Blind Ambition, he "paints a candid picture of the sickening moral bankruptcy which permeated the White House and to which he contributed. His memory of who said what and to whom is astounding" (Foreign Affairs).

Описание:

Widely regarded as Sadegh Hedayat's masterpiece, the Blind Owl is the most important work of literature to come out of Iran in the past century. On the surface this work seems to be a tale of doomed love, but with the turning of each page basic facts become obscure and the reader soon realizes this book is much more than a love story. Although the Blind Owl has been compared to the works of the Kafka, Rilke and Poe, this work defies categorization. Lescot's French translation made the Blind Owl world-famous, while D.P. Costello's English translation made it largely accessible. Sadly, this work has yet to find its way into the English pantheon of Classics. This 75th anniversary edition, translated by award-winning writer Naveed Noori and published in conjunction with the Hedayat Foundation, aims to change this and is notable for a number of firsts: *The only translation endorsed by the Sadegh Hedayat Foundation *The first translation to use the definitive Bombay edition (Hedayat's handwritten text) *The only available English translation by a native Persian and English speaker *The preface includes a detailed textual analysis of the Blind Owl Finally, by largely preserving the spirit as well as the structure of Hedayat's writing, this edition brings the English reader into the world of the Hedayat's Blind Owl as never before. Extensive footnotes (explaining Persian words, phrases, and customs ignored in previous translations) provide deeper understanding of this work for both the causal reader and the serious student of literature.

.."..There are indeed marked differences between Costello's and Noori's translations. As Noori indicates, his attempt to preserve the overabundance of dashes gives the reader a more immediate sense of the narrator's agitation...The first sentence flows on in Noori's translation, piling sensation upon sensation never allowing us to pause and catch our breath or separate out the images from the sensations. In his discussion of the relationship between his translation and Costello's, Noori also draws on translation theory and sees Costello's focus on the fluidity of the text in English as a "domestication" of Hedayat's original. Noori's new English translation and his preface are a welcome addition and will no doubt draw the attention of scholars interested in Hedayat's works. The close textual and comparative analysis of the type Noori offers marks a new and long-overdue critical approach to the translation of the most celebrated work of modern Persian prose." -Professor Nasrin Rahimieh in Middle Eastern Literatures
