Uses mathematical, numerical, and programming tools to solve differential equations for physical phenomena and engineering problems
Introduction to Computation and Modeling for Differential Equations, Second Edition features the essential principles and applications of problem solving across disciplines such as engineering, physics, and chemistry. The Second Edition integrates the science of solving differential equations with mathematical, numerical, and programming tools, specifically with methods involving ordinary differential equations; numerical methods for initial value problems (IVPs); numerical methods for boundary value problems (BVPs); partial differential equations (PDEs); numerical methods for parabolic, elliptic, and hyperbolic PDEs; mathematical modeling with differential equations; numerical solutions; and finite difference and finite element methods.
The author features a unique "Five-M" approach: Modeling, Mathematics, Methods, MATLAB(R), and Multiphysics, which facilitates a thorough understanding of how models are created and preprocessed mathematically with scaling, classification, and approximation and also demonstrates how a problem is solved numerically using the appropriate mathematical methods. With numerous real-world examples to aid in the visualization of the solutions, Introduction to Computation and Modeling for Differential Equations, Second Edition includes:
New sections on topics including variational formulation, the finite element method, examples of discretization, ansatz methods such as Galerkin's method for BVPs, parabolic and elliptic PDEs, and finite volume methods
Numerous practical examples with applications in mechanics, fluid dynamics, solid mechanics, chemical engineering, heat conduction, electromagnetic field theory, and control theory, some of which are solved with computer programs MATLAB and COMSOL Multiphysics(R)
Additional exercises that introduce new methods, projects, and problems to further illustrate possible applications
A related website with select solutions to the exercises, as well as the MATLAB data sets for ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and PDEs
Introduction to Computation and Modeling for Differential Equations, Second Edition is a useful textbook for upper-undergraduate and graduate-level courses in scientific computing, differential equations, ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations, and numerical methods. The book is also an excellent self-study guide for mathematics, science, computer science, physics, and engineering students, as well as an excellent reference for practitioners and consultants who use differential equations and numerical methods in everyday situations.

This book is directed toward the numerical integration (solution) of a system of partial differential equations (PDEs) that describes a combination of chemical reaction and diffusion, that is, reaction-diffusion PDEs. The particular form of the PDEs corresponds to a system discussed by Alan Turing and is therefore termed a Turing model.
Specifically, Turing considered how a reaction-diffusion system can be formulated that does not have the usual smoothing properties of a diffusion (dispersion) system, and can, in fact, develop a spatial variation that might be interpreted as a form of morphogenesis, so he termed the chemicals as morphogens.
Turing alluded to the important impact computers would have in the study of a morphogenic PDE system, but at the time (1952), computers were still not readily available. Therefore, his paper is based on analytical methods. Although computers have since been applied to Turing models, computer-based analysis is still not facilitated by a discussion of numerical algorithms and a readily available system of computer routines.
The intent of this book is to provide a basic discussion of numerical methods and associated computer routines for reaction-diffusion systems of varying form. The presentation has a minimum of formal mathematics. Rather, the presentation is in terms of detailed examples, presented at an introductory level. This format should assist readers who are interested in developing computer-based analysis for reaction-diffusion PDE systems without having to first study numerical methods and computer programming (coding).
The numerical examples are discussed in terms of: (1) numerical integration of the PDEs to demonstrate the spatiotemporal features of the solutions and (2) a numerical eigenvalue analysis that corroborates the observed temporal variation of the solutions. The resulting temporal variation of the 2D and 3D plots demonstrates how the solutions evolve dynamically, including oscillatory long-term behavior.
In all of the examples, routines in R are presented and discussed in detail. The routines are available through this link so that the reader can execute the PDE models to reproduce the reported solutions, then experiment with the models, including extensions and application to alternative models.

This book presents a detailed description of a robust pseudomultigrid algorithm for solving (initial-)boundary value problems on structured grids in a black-box manner. To overcome the problem of robustness, the presented Robust Multigrid Technique (RMT) is based on the application of the essential multigrid principle in a single grid algorithm. It results in an extremely simple, very robust and highly parallel solver with close-to-optimal algorithmic complexity and the least number of problem-dependent components. Topics covered include an introduction to the mathematical principles of multigrid methods, a detailed description of RMT, results of convergence analysis and complexity, possible expansion on unstructured grids, numerical experiments and a brief description of multigrid software, parallel RMT and estimations of speed-up and efficiency of the parallel multigrid algorithms, and finally applications of RMT for the numerical solution of the incompressible Navier Stokes equations. Potential readers are graduate students and researchers working in applied and numerical mathematics as well as multigrid practitioners and software programmers.

With a focus on mathematical models based on real and current data, Models for Life: An Introduction to Discrete Mathematical Modeling with Microsoft(R) Office Excel(R) guides readers in the solution of relevant, practical problems by introducing both mathematical and Excel techniques.
The book begins with a step-by-step introduction to discrete dynamical systems, which are mathematical models that describe how a quantity changes from one point in time to the next. Readers are taken through the process, language, and notation required for the construction of such models as well as their implementation in Excel. The book examines single-compartment models in contexts such as population growth, personal finance, and body weight and provides an introduction to more advanced, multi-compartment models via applications in many areas, including military combat, infectious disease epidemics, and ranking methods. Models for Life: An Introduction to Discrete Mathematical Modeling with Microsoft(R) Office Excel(R) also features:
A modular organization that, after the first chapter, allows readers to explore chapters in any order
Numerous practical examples and exercises that enable readers to personalize the presented models by using their own data
Carefully selected real-world applications that motivate the mathematical material such as predicting blood alcohol concentration, ranking sports teams, and tracking credit card debt
References throughout the book to disciplinary research on which the presented models and model parameters are based in order to provide authenticity and resources for further study
Relevant Excel concepts with step-by-step guidance, including screenshots to help readers better understand the presented material
