Описание: Sir James Dewar was a major figure in British chemistry for around 40 years. He is remembered principally for his efforts to liquefy hydrogen successfully in the field that would come to be known as cryogenics. This title presents his portrait.
Описание: This book transcribes and comments on the manuscript Minutes of the meetings in a London coffee house of a group of 18th century scientists, natural philosophers, and industrialists who discussed some of the key scientific issues of the day. Their debates offer a rare authentic contemporary account of the scientific and social thinking of their time.
Описание: This open access book chronicles the rise of a new scientific paradigm offering novel insights into the age-old enigmas of existence. In this fascinating and accessible volume, James Glattfelder explores a radical paradigm shift uncovering the ontology of reality.
Описание: Modern chemistry is integral to modern life. The authors of this 1998 book describe how chemists emerged as professional scientists in countries from Britain to Lithuania, and how international links and competition affected the process. It is an important contribution to European history of science.

Описание: Robert Angus Smith (1817-1884) was a Scottish chemist and a leading investigator into what came to be known as `acid rain`. This study of his life and work sheds light on the evolving understanding of sanitary science during the 19th century and of the need for regulation and enforcement of the chemical industries.
The question of origins remains a stumbling block for many. But just as the Psalmist gained insight into God's character through the observation of nature, modern scientific study can deepen and enrich our vision of the Creator and our place in his creation. In this often contentious field Bishop, Funck, Lewis, Moshier, and Walton serve as our able guides. Based on over two decades of teaching origins together in the classroom, the authors present a textbook exploring mainstream scientific theories of origins in astronomy, cosmology, chemistry, geology, biology, physical anthropology, and genetics. While many authors engage origins from a Christian perspective, this is the first work offering a full-fledged discussion of the scientific narrative of origins from the Big Bang through humankind, from biblical and theological perspectives accessible to a lay audience. Topics include
Principles of biblical interpretation
Close readings of relevant Genesis texts
A comprehensive Trinitarian doctrine of creation
Cosmic origins
The geologic history of Earth
The origin of life on Earth
The origin of species and diversity of life
Human origins
New creation and creation care
Science education
Rather than the familiar scenario where science and faith compete, this book seeks to diffuse tensions by taking the inspiration and authority of the Bible seriously while respecting and honoring God's revelation through creation. Understanding Scientific Theories of Origins gives the reader a detailed picture of the sciences of origins along with how they fit into the story of God's creative and redemptive action.
BioLogos Books on Science and Christianity invite us to see the harmony between the sciences and biblical faith on issues including cosmology, biology, paleontology, evolution, human origins, the environment, and more.

Описание: Robert Angus Smith (1817-1884) was a Scottish chemist and a leading investigator into what came to be known as 'acid rain'. This study of his working life, contextualized through discussion of his childhood, education, beliefs, family, interests and influences sheds light on the evolving understanding of sanitary science during the nineteenth century. Born in Glasgow and initially trained for a career in the Church of Scotland, Smith instead went on to study chemistry in Germany under Justus von Liebig. On his return to Manchester in the 1840s, Smith's strong Calvinist faith lead him to develop a strong concern for the insanitary environmental conditions in Manchester and other industrial towns in Britain. His appointment as Inspector of the Alkali Administration in 1863 enabled him to marry his social concerns and his work as an analytical chemist, and this book explores his role as Inspector of the Administration from its inception through battles with chemical manufacturers in the courts, to the struggle to widen and tighten the regulatory framework as other harmful chemical nuisances became known. This study of Smith’s life and work provides an important background to the way that 'chemical' came to have such negative connotations in the century before publication of Rachel Carson's Silent Spring. It also offers a fascinating insight into the changing landscape of British politics as regulation and enforcement of the chemical industries came to be seen as necessary, and is essential reading for historians of science, technology and industry in the nineteenth century, as well as environmental historians seeking background context to the twentieth-century environmental movements.
