The burgeoning British empire was concerned with expanding its global influence and the task of the navy was principally to support the more generally employed land based forces in a multitude of smaller campaigns. However, it was quickly appreciated that the expertise of sailors and marines could be invaluable on the battlefield, particularly with regard to their expertise as gunners. So naval brigades had been in action from the 1820s in a dozen conflicts, including the Indian Mutiny, the Crimean War and the Zulu War, before the outbreak of the Anglo-Boer War in South Africa at the turn of the twentieth century. This book describes the activities of the big guns ashore and in action on the veldt. Of particular note is the service of the sailors from HMS Powerful at Ladysmith-a feat of arms that is still commemorated in 'the field gun run' at the Royal Tournament. So the 'great age of sail' was epitomised by the Royal Navy. From the time of Drake and the defeat of the Spanish Armada the British navy grew in in both its renown and its efficiency. In the eighteenth century, as the wars with France raged, the Royal Navy's finest commanders became national heroes and gained everlasting fame. By the turn of the nineteenth century the greatest threat to European stability was the rise of Revolutionary, Consulate and Imperial France under Napoleon Bonaparte. However, Nelson was no anomaly, the British navy produced a succession of great commanders who were almost his equal. Edward Riou (1762–1801) was a sea officer in the British Royal Navy. As a midshipman, he participated in the third voyage of Captain James Cook. He gained popular acclaim for saving HMS Guardian after she had struck an iceberg. Riou was killed in the Battle of Copenhagen (1801). Lord Nelson lamented Riou’s death as an irreparable loss. Later authors alluded to him as a «perfect naval officer».
This biography sheds new light on Riou’s notions of his duty as a King’s officer and on his methods to enforce cleanliness and discipline aboard the ships he commanded. It introduces dissenting appraisals by men who served under him. As a microhistorical study, this biography analyses Riou’s leadership style and puts him into his social context by comparing him with his fellow officers.
