Описание: Russians in Iran seeks to challenge the traditional narrative regarding Russian involvement Iran and to show that whilst Russia's historical involvement in Iran is longstanding it is nonetheless much misunderstood. Russia's influence in Iran between 1800 and the middle of the twentieth century is not simply a story of inexorable intrusion and domination: rather, it is a complex and interactive process of mostly indirect control and constructive engagement. Drawing on fresh archival material, the contributors provide a window into the power and influence wielded in Iran not just by the Russian government through it traditional representatives but by Russian nationals operating in Iran in a variety of capacities, including individuals, bankers, and entrepreneurs. Russians in Iran reveals the multifaceted role that Russians have played in Iranian history and provides an original and important contribution to the history and international relations of Iran, Russia and the Middle East.

Описание: The title of this book refers to the Cold War that ended in a whimper. Lincoln Landis, a U.S.-Russian liaison during key periods of the Cold War, offers a simple explanation: communism in the Soviet Union began to collapse the moment Premier Joseph Stalin brought the U.S.S.R. into the United Nations in 1945. In the author's view, this fateful act of diplomacy opened Soviet communism to the scrutiny of his one-on-one U.S. liaison activity during such key periods as the Berlin Airlift crisis in 1948, the Berlin Wall crisis in 1961, and the d tente period beginning in the 1970s. Chapters include: Cold War turning congenial, 1945-1946; Unraveling during the Berlin Airlift crisis, 1947-1948; Unraveling during the Berlin Wall crisis, 1961-1963; Unraveling during d tente, 1976-1977; and, "Collapse" revealed in a grassroots revolution.
This catalogue is one of the first visual representations of the material religion and art objects of Naser al-Din Shah's court, vis vis popular Shiite beliefs during the Naseri period (1848-1896). In this work, Pedram Khosronejad has paid special attention to the role of Naser al-Din Shah's popular Shiite values in shaping attitudes toward the depiction in portraiture of the Prophet Mohammad and Imam Ali.
Khosronejad's observations further confirm Naser al-Din Shah's deep-rooted connections to popular Shiite beliefs and related superstitions, along with his interest in Shiite rituals and ceremonies.

The study of race and ethnicity should be considered as an overlooked subject in the field of Iranian photography. One of the important themes in this regard which requires special attention is photography of enslaved people in Iran during the Qajar period. Students of the field have not shown any particular interest in photography of the enslaved in general, nor of African slaves in particular. Therefore, photography of Africans enslaved during the last decades of the Qajar period (1840s-1920s) should be considered as a new topic in the field of visual studies of modern Iran.
Qajar photographs in which the presence of African slaves (children, women and men) can be observed were mostly taken by Nasser al-Din Shah inside his harem, or in his own studio. The remainder of such photographs were taken by court photographers inside the court, during the king's travels, or on other occasions and locations but outside the court.
This book is the first of its kind to use photographs of the Qajar period to prove the level of ability of the medium to document and simultaneously pathologise the history, culture, story, and maybe struggle of African slave communities in Qajar Iran.
Pedram Khosronejad has amassed an incredible collection of major interest to historians of slavery, Africanists, scholars of photography, anthropologists, and others.
Uniquely and collectively these affecting portraits of stone-faced, sad-eyed men, women and children tell poignant stories of loss, violent separations, and brutal dislocation. Those are their stories and, as is too often forgotten, also those of their families, who lost them forever.
Looking at the vanished world Pedram Khosronejad rescued from oblivion and forces us to confront should also lead us to learn about the resilient contemporary Afro-Iranian community and its place in today's society.

Описание:
Despite its apparently peripheral location in the Qajar Empire, Kirman was frequently found at the centre of developments reshaping Iran in the 19th century. Over the Qajar period the region saw significant changes, as competition between Kirmani families rapidly developed commercial cotton and opium production and a world renowned carpet weaving industry, as well as giving strength to radical modernist and nationalist agitation in the years leading up to the 1906 Constitutional Revolution.
Kirman and the Qajar Empire explores how these Kirmani local elites mediated political, economic, and social change in their community during the significant transitional period in Iran's history, from the rise of the Qajar Empire through to World War I. It departs from the prevailing centre-periphery models of economic integration and Qajar provincial history, engaging with key questions over how Iranians participated in reshaping their communities in the context of imperialism and growing transnational connections. With rarely utilized local historical and geographical writings, as well as a range of narrative and archival sources, this book provides new insight into the impact of household factionalism and estate building over four generations in the Kirman region. As well as offering the first academic monograph on modern Kirman, it is also an important case study in local dimensions of modernity.
This book will be of interest to students and scholars of Iranian studies and Iranian History, as well as general Middle Eastern studies.
