Описание: To what extent is theatre a contagious force, capable of undoing and enlivening people and cultures? This book responds to the current political and cultural climate by investigating theatres status as a contagious cultural practice, questioning its role in the spread or control of medical, psychological and emotional conditions and phenomena. Observing a diverse range of practices from the early modern to contemporary period, essays consider how this contagion is understood to happen and operate, its real and imagined effects, and how these have been a source of pleasure and anxiety for theatre makers, audiences and authorities. Drawing on perspectives from medicine, neuroscience, psychology, religion, anthropology and law, essays collectively explore some of the ways in which theatre can be viewed as a powerful agent of containment and transmission. Among the works analyzed are a musical adaptation and an intercultural variation of Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet; a contemporary queer take on Hamlet; a site-specific adaptation of Elizabeth Inchbalds 1792 suppressed tragedy, The Massacre; the writings and influence of Artaud; productions at the Parisian Theatre du Grand-Guignol; the work of Punchdrunk and smartphone apps which simulate pathological phenomena.

Описание: This volume considers the phenomenon of mimetic contagion, whereby works of art draw viewers into direct imitation of themselves, and how it operates within specific historical contexts. Terence`s Eunuch is used as a case study, situating the motif within the peculiarities of mid-second-century BC Rome and its anxieties about the power of art.
