Описание: Morton Feldman: Friendship and Mourning in the New York Avant-garde brings new attention to friendship in the history of avant-garde music, art, and poetry. Through detailed study of composer Morton Feldmans collaborations with John Cage, Jackson Pollock, Philip Guston, Seymour Lipton, Frank OHara, Charlotte Moorman, and Joan La Barbara, the book demonstrates how personal and aesthetic conflicts over abstract expressionism and experimental music raged primarily on the socio-political terrain of friendship. Morton Feldman also argue that acts of mourning through artistic production were essential to the a group identity of the New York School. Feldmans myriad relationships provide evidence showing that friendship mediates aesthetic objects and was itself mediated by them in return. Artifacts like poems, films, compositions, and recordings register the tensions between the agape of friendship and what Gillian Rose calls the agon of authorship. This book offers a method for documenting the affective and epistemological conditions of friendship-how it makes us feel about historical subjects and what it enables us to know about them. It offers an emotional and intimate retelling of New York modernism written from the point of view of Feldmans community.
