Описание: Reinterprets Chile and southern South Americas Cold War experience from a transatlantic perspective
  • Draws on archival sources from several countries, including recently declassified documents in the United States
  • Explicitly connects Chile and the transatlantic origins of the whole Cold War to subsequent Chilean history from the late-1940s into the 1970s
  • Acknowledges the importance and pertinence of intra-Latin American relations, particularly Chileans relations with their neighbours
  • Reconstructs Chiles early nuclear history and folds it into the larger whole of the Eisenhower administrations Atoms for Peace proposal and the IAEAs subsequent history, further mapping the emergence of the global nuclear landscape
  • Find out more: listen to an interview with James Lockhart on the Scholars Strategy Network podcast

James Lockhart blends Chilean, inter-American and transatlantic national, regional and world-historical trends into a century-long Cold War narrative. He argues that Chileans made their own history as highly engaged internationalists while reassessing American and other foreign-directed intelligence, surveillance and secret warfare operations in Chile and southern South America.

The book transcends a well-known, US-centred historiography while offering a more equitable and global interpretation of Chiles Cold War experience than previously possible. This advances research that has progressively expanded the framework of Chiles Cold War experience since the arrest of General Augusto Pinochet in the UK for human rights violations more than 20 years ago.

Описание: As Marko Dumančic writes in his introduction to Gender, Sexuality, and the Cold War, "despite the centrality of gender and sexuality in human relations, their scholarly study has played a secondary role in the history of the Cold War. . . . It is not an exaggeration to say that few were left unaffected by Cold War gender politics; even those who were in charge of producing, disseminating, and enforcing cultural norms were called on to live by the gender and sexuality models into which they breathed life." This underscores the importance of this volume, as here scholars tackle issues ranging from depictions of masculinity during the all-consuming space race, to the vibrant activism of Indian peasant women during this period, to the policing of sexuality inside the militaries of the world.
Gender, Sexuality, and the Cold War brings together a diverse group of scholars whose combined research spans fifteen countries across five continents, claiming a place as the first volume to examine how issues of gender and sexuality impacted both the domestic and foreign policies of states, far beyond the borders of the United States, during the tumult of the Cold War.

Описание: During the early 1880s a continual interaction of events, ideas, and people in Ireland and the United States created a ""Greater Ireland"" spanning the Atlantic that profoundly impacted both Irish and American society. In A Greater Ireland: The Land League and Transatlantic Nationalism in Gilded Age America, Ely M. Janis closely examines the Irish National Land League, a transatlantic organization with strong support in Ireland and the United States. Founded in Ireland in 1879 against the backdrop of crop failure and agrarian unrest, the Land League pressured the British government to reform the Irish landholding system and allow Irish political self-rule. The League quickly spread to the United States, with hundreds of thousands of Irish Americans participating in branches in their local communities. As this ""Greater Ireland"" flourished, new opportunities arose for women and working-class men to contribute within Irish-American society. Exploring the complex interplay of ethnicity, class, and gender, Janis demonstrates the broad range of ideological, social, and political opinion held by Irish Americans in the 1880s. Participation in the Land League deeply influenced a generation that replaced their old county and class allegiances with a common cause, shaping the future of Irish-American nationalism.
