Описание:

William Stephens was Secretary of the Province of Georgia from 1737 to 1750 and was President from 1741 for ten years. He was sent to America by the Trustees of Georgia, who resided in London, to keep them informed on conditions in the colony. Besides writing numerous letters to the Trustees, Stephens kept a journal which he sent to them periodically. The journal down to 1741 was printed by the Trustees. Here in this volume (and the volume for 1741-1743) the continuation of the journal is published for the first time.

Through his journal Stephens undertook to inform the Trustees of everything which happened in Georgia, from the most trivial to the most important. This close-up view of Georgia, the details of the everyday life of the people, and the record of significant development in the colony all make his journal a valuable document in American colonial history.

Описание:

The one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the capture of Louisburg was celebrated on June 17, 1895 at Louisburg, Cape Breton and the government of New Hampshire authorized the printing of a report of the event written by its representative, George C. Gilmore, Special Commissioner. This report included the names of the soldiers and sailors from New Hampshire who served at the capture of Louisburg and all of the historical facts connected to the event. This book is the result of the "Joint Resolution to Authorize the Governor and Council to Appoint a Person or Persons to Represent the State of New Hampshire at the Proposed Celebration at Louisburg" which was passed March 28, 1895. Gilmore's task was especially challenging as the original muster rolls were sent to England and not returned. His report states that: "The number of men from New Hampshire in the expedition when it sailed for Louisburg was 502. Recruits, 120 at least, and probably more. Have found the names of 496 men, leaving 126 unaccounted for. The residences of the men, as given, are the writer's."

Описание:

The first depredation by the Indians in the Connecticut valley, during King Georges war, was on the Great Meadow. On October 11, 1745, 'Black Friday, ' Nehemiah How left the safety of the Great Meadow Fort (now Putney, Windham County, Vermont) to cut some wood and was captured by a party of Abenakis of St. Francis as he returned to the fort. His captors continued northward until they arrived at Black River, in the environs of Fort No. 4, now Charlestown, N.H. They then struck out to cross the mountain wilderness of the present state of Vermont; probably came as far as what is now Larrabee's Point, opposite Fort Ticonderoga continued to Crown Point, and embarked for Quebec, through Lake Champlain and the rivers of Sorel and St. Lawrence. According to How's testimony in his pamphlet and his deposition at Quebec he was not subjected to any severe cruelties by his Indian captors, who generally were kind to him. Nehemiah How gives an account of his journey to Canada, and his imprisonment there. How died in a prison in Quebec on May 25, 1747.
