Описание:
In her prolific work as a scholar and essayist-laying the "laborious foundations," as she called it-Kathleen Raine spent little effort elucidating her meaning as a poet; but it becomes evident to any attentive reader that these labors give a resonant indication of the premises and values that inform her craft-on which, as a poet, she proceeded and wished finally to be judged. If there is to be a worthy-if belated-critical assessment of Kathleen Raine's poetry, it must of necessity proceed on the basis of an appropriate understanding: especially in this case seeing that this is a poetry that rests upon premises far removed from the sort of values that, for the most part, are likely to preoccupy both the writer and reader of contemporary poetry. For this reason the reader will find in this book very little attempt to "judge" and every effort to elucidate. This collection of studies by the eminent perennialist author Brian Keeble, a long-time friend, colleague, and editor of the poet, is a series of regards, each having a focal point that differs from its neighbors, but which nonetheless is directed towards the same subject-the poet's singular imaginative vision. Considered together, the reader will find in this book a reliably authentic foundation on which to build an appreciation of Kathleen Raine's poetic accomplishment.

Описание: A poetic botanical index, Julie Poole`s debut collection explores the history and science of, and human interaction with, the natural world.
Описание: Light and darkness shape our perception of the world. This is true in a literal sense, but also metaphorically: in theology, philosophy, literature and the arts the light of day signifies life, safety, knowledge and all that is good, while the darkness of the night suggests death, danger, ignorance and evil. A closer inspection, however, reveals that things are not quite so clear cut and that light and darkness cannot be understood as simple binary opposites. On a biological level, for example, daylight and darkness are inseparable factors in the calibration of our circadian rhythms, and a lack of periodical darkness appears to be as contrary to health as a lack of exposure to sunlight. On a cultural level, too, night and darkness are far from being universally condemnable: in fiction, drama and poetry the darkness of the night allows not only nightmares but also dreams, it allows criminals to ply their trade and allows lovers to meet, it allows the pursuit of pleasure as well as deep thought, it allows metamorphoses, transformations and transgressions unthinkable in the light of day. But night is not merely darkness. The night gains significance as an alternative space, as an ‘other of the day’, only when it is at least partially illuminated. The volume examines the interconnection of night, darkness and nocturnal illumination across a broad range of literary texts. The individual essays examine historically specific light conditions in literature, tracing the symbolic and metaphoric content of darkness and illumination and the attitudes towards them.

Описание:
In her beguiling new collection, Bright Stranger, Katherine Soniat invites the reader to celebrate the unfinished and unsure. The poems in this volume do not demand or offer certainty, existing instead in the spaces between the real and the imagined, between past and present and future. They explore the human connection to nature, contemplating loss in the erosion of rock spires and rebirth in the blossoming of an amaranth. Visually playful lines recall the poems' existence in the physical world, even as Soniat's words transport the reader from the rugged isolation of the Grand Canyon, to the elements within the periodic table, and on to "the unwinding spool of grey" in the mythic underworld of Hades. Bright Stranger offers a soaring vision of the world in all its chaos, bewilderment, and joy.

Описание:
Bright with Invisible History gathers a selection of poetry, short stories, journal entries, book reviews, and other prose by a remarkable man. William Bauer's writings are full of affection for the puzzling and often humorous behaviour of human beings. He catches both the strangeness and the pathos of our lives.
Memorable voices and characters, along with lyrical reflections and autobiographical musings, flow from Bauer's imagination. His language ranges from the playfulness and rich diction of 18th-century British prose-writers (his teaching specialty) to the vernacular spark of 20th-century Maritime and New England speech. He had a special skill for using humour to explore life's questions and quandaries. Suspicious of high seriousness, Bauer wrote some of the zestiest poetry and fiction of his time.
With the publication of Bright with Invisible History we now have the full range of William Bauer's storytelling, inventiveness, and original mind brought together in the pages of one book.
