Описание: Historian E. Merton Coulter famously said that Kentucky ""waited until after the war was over to secede from the Union."" In this fresh study, Anne E. Marshall traces the development of a Confederate identity in Kentucky between 1865 and 1925 that belied the fact that Kentucky never left the Union and that more Kentuckians fought for the North than for the South. Following the Civil War, the people of Kentucky appeared to forget their Union loyalties, embracing the Democratic politics, racial violence, and Jim Crow laws associated with formerly Confederate states. Although, on the surface, white Confederate memory appeared to dominate the historical landscape of postwar Kentucky, Marshall's closer look reveals an active political and cultural dialogue that included white Unionists, Confederate Kentuckians, and the state's African Americans, who, from the last days of the war, drew on Union victory and their part in winning it to lay claim to the fruits of freedom and citizenship. Rather than focusing exclusively on postwar political and economic factors, Creating a Confederate Kentucky looks over the longer term at Kentuckians' activities--public memorial ceremonies, dedications of monuments, and veterans organizations' events--by which they commemorated the Civil War and fixed the state's remembrance of it for sixty years following the conflict. |Marshall traces the development of a Confederate identity in Kentucky between 1865 and 1925 that belied the fact that Kentucky never left the Union and that more Kentuckians fought for the North than for the South. Описание: This book is a study of the slow growth of the movement for reform, the basis of opposition, the gradual success that was achieved, and the close relationship between the regulation of child labor and the development of public education in the South--the two movements necessarily accompanying and supplementing each other.

Despite Porfirio D?az's authoritarian rule (1877-1911) and the fifteen years of violent conflict typifying much of Mexican politics after 1917, law and judicial decision-making were important for the country's political and economic organization. Influenced by French theories of jurisprudence in addition to domestic events, progressive Mexican legal thinkers concluded that the liberal view of law—as existing primarily to guarantee the rights of individuals and of private property—was inadequate for solving the "social question"; the aim of the legal regime should instead be one of harmoniously regulating relations between interdependent groups of social actors. This book argues that the federal judiciary's adjudication of labor disputes and its elaboration of new legal principles played a significant part in the evolution of Mexican labor law and the nation's political and social compact. Indeed, this conclusion might seem paradoxical in a country with a civil law tradition, weak judiciary, authoritarian government, and endemic corruption. Suarez-Potts shows how and why judge-made law mattered, and why contemporaries paid close attention to the rulings of Supreme Court justices in labor cases as the nation's system of industrial relations was established.

Описание: England's ill-fated first attempt to colonize America at Roanoke Island in 1585, more than 30 years before the Pilgrims set sail, has been the focus of numerous studies, fictional retellings and media interpretations. Much of the available material on the Lost Colony is based on research conducted more than 60 years ago.Drawing on newly discovered documents, recent archaeological finds and a close reading of contemporary writings, this book brings some fresh perspective to the Roanoke story. The author discusses the 2012 discovery of a ""hidden"" fort on Virginia Governor John White's 1585 map and challenges accepted theories about the Dare Stones. Biographies of White and Sir Richard Grenville - Sir Walter Raleigh's cousin and a more involved participant in the venture than previously credited - are included, along with previously unpublished images.

Описание: When Governor John White sailed for England from Roanoke Island in August 1587, he left behind more than 100 men, women and children. They were never seen again by Europeans. For more than four centuries the fate of the Roanoke colony has remained a mystery, despite the many attempts to construct a satisfactory scientific explanation. New research suggests that all past and present theories are based upon a series of erroneous assumptions that have persisted for centuries. Through a close examination of the early accounts, previously unknown or unexamined documents and native Algonquian oral tradition, this book deconstructs the traditional theories. What emerges is a fresh narrative of the activities, challenges, disappointments and ultimate fate of the Lost Colony.

Описание: Near the end of his life, Roger Williams, Rhode Island founder and father of American religious freedom, scrawled an encrypted essay in the margins of a colonial-era book. For more than 300 years those shorthand notes remained indecipherable... ...until a team of Brown University undergraduates led by Lucas Mason-Brown cracked Williams code after the marginalia languished for over a century in the archives of the John Carter Brown Library. At the time of Williams writing, a trans-Atlantic debate on infant versus believers baptism had taken shape that included London Baptist minister John Norcott and the famous Puritan "Apostle to the Indians," John Eliot. Amazingly, Williams code contained a previously undiscovered essay, which was a point-by-point refutation of Eliots book supporting infant baptism. History professors Linford D. Fisher and J. Stanley Lemons immediately recognized the importance of what turned out to be theologian Roger Williams final treatise. Decoding Roger Williams reveals for the first time Williams translated and annotated essay, along with a critical essay by Fisher, Lemons, and Mason-Brown and reprints of the original Norcott and Eliot tracts.
