Описание: Architectural Guide. Monterrey means mountain king, a name befitting its location surrounded by the Sierra Madre in north-eastern Mexico. It was founded in 1596 near the natural springs of Santa Lucia, a luscious oasis in an otherwise arid landscape. Its colonial beginnings are still visible in the architecture of the Barrio Antiguo district in the city centre. In the late 19th century, industrial development transformed the modest town into a flourishing, modern city. Its foundries and breweries reflect its industry, while its skyscrapers, universities, churches, and monuments designed by celebrated Mexican modernist architects like Mario Pani,
Описание: In this biography of Joaquin de Arredondo, historian Bradley Folsom brings to life one of the most influential and ruthless leaders in North American history. Arredondo (1776-1837) was a Bourbon loyalist who governed Texas and the other interior provinces of northeastern New Spain during the Mexican War of Independence.
One day in 2012, George F. Arredondo asked himself a question-and found the answer rather startling.
A successful businessman with a full bank account, gorgeous home, and beautiful young family, Arredondo realized that if he had only one year left to live, he would want to spend it traveling the United States with his wife and two sons. And even more surprising, Arredondo realized that he was willing to walk away from his job and home to make that dream a reality.
After convincing his family to leave behind their comfortable lives in exchange for life on the open road, he found an RV, made extensive plans, and set off.
"50 States 50 Weeks" tells the story of the Arredondo family and the lessons they learn-about themselves, their country, and what's really important-as they travel from Northern California to Southern California by way of the other forty-nine states.
Full of humor and heart, these stories and anecdotes will delight the whole family...and just might inspire you to start planning the next family vacation

Описание:
Translating Nature recasts the era of early modern science as an age not of discovery but of translation. As Iberian and Protestant empires expanded across the Americas, colonial travelers encountered, translated, and reinterpreted Amerindian traditions of knowledge—knowledge that was later translated by the British, reading from Spanish and Portuguese texts. Translations of natural and ethnographic knowledge therefore took place across multiple boundaries—linguistic, cultural, and geographical—and produced, through their transmissions, the discoveries that characterize the early modern era. In the process, however, the identities of many of the original bearers of knowledge were lost or hidden in translation. The essays in Translating Nature explore the crucial role that the translation of philosophical and epistemological ideas played in European scientific exchanges with American Indians; the ethnographic practices and methods that facilitated appropriation of Amerindian knowledge; the ideas and practices used to record, organize, translate, and conceptualize Amerindian naturalist knowledge; and the persistent presence and influence of Amerindian and Iberian naturalist and medical knowledge in the development of early modern natural history. Contributors highlight the global nature of the history of science, the mobility of knowledge in the early modern era, and the foundational roles that Native Americans, Africans, and European Catholics played in this age of translation. Описание: In a professional learning community, teachers are organized into teams, committed to meeting on a regular basis to study their teaching strategies and the effects of those strategies on the students in their classrooms. Whatever the organizational structure, the teams have one goal, that is to improve teaching so that student learning is improved.
