The chains we cannot see can be the hardest ones to break.
When Aulus runs up a gambling debt to his father's political enemy, he's desperate to pay it off before his father returns to Rome. His best friend Marcus suggests they fake the kidnapping of Aulus's sister Julia and use the ransom money. But when the man they hired kidnaps her for real, Aulus is catapulted into a desperate search to find her.
Torn from his childhood home by Rome's conquering armies and sold as a farm slave to labor until he dies, Dacius's faith gives him strength to bear what he must and serve without complaining. After a deadly accident makes him one of Julia's litter bearers, he overhears Marcus advising her brother to kidnap her. When Dacius almost dies thwarting the kidnapping, a Christian couple take them in to keep her brother from finding them before her father returns.
But pretending to be free again makes returning to slavery more than Dacius can bear, while acting like a common woman opens Julia's eyes to dreams and destinies she never knew existed. With her brother closing in and her father almost home, can she find a way around Roman law and custom to free them both for the future they long for?
Dangerous times, difficult friendships, lives transformed by forgiveness and love
The Light in the Empire series follows the interconnected lives of four Roman families during the reigns of Trajan and Hadrian. Each can be read stand-alone. The eight novels of the series will take you around the Empire, from Germania and Britannia to Thracia, Dacia, and Judaea and, of course, to Rome itself.

Is the price of true friendship ever too high?
In AD 122, Adela, the fiery daughter of a Germanic chieftain, is kidnapped and taken across the Roman frontier to be sold as a slave. When horse-trader Otto wins her while gambling with her kidnappers, he entrusts her to his friend and trading partner, Galen. Then Otto is kidnapped by the same men, and Galen must track them half way across the Empire before his best friend loses a fight to the death in a Roman arena.
Adela joins Galen in the chase, hungry for vengeance. As the perilous journey deepens their friendship, will the kind, faithful man open her eyes to a life she never dreamed she'd want?
A trip to the heart of the Empire poses mortal danger to a man who follows Jesus, especially when he must seek the help of an enemy of the faith for Otto to survive. Tiberius hunted Christians when he governed Germania Superior and banished his own son when he became one.
When Tiberius learns sparing Galen offers a chance at reconciliation, he joins the trio on their journey home. Can his animosity toward the followers of Jesus survive a trip with the Christian man whose courage and faithfulness demand his respect?

Can the deepest loss bring the greatest gain?
Rome's conquering army took Ariana's family and freedom, but nothing can take her faith in Jesus. When she rescues a tribune's wife from certain death, her reward is freedom and a chance to free her brother and sister. But first she must catch up with the slave caravan before they vanish forever, and tracking them from Dacia to the coast seems impossible for one woman alone.
Discharged from the legion with a hand crippled by a Dacian knife, Donatus faces a future without hope. When the tribune asks him to escort Ariana on her quest, it's the only work he can find. It means four weeks with a Dacian woman and a gladiator bodyguard, but it takes money to eat. A man without options must take what he can get.
But a lot can happen in four weeks. Even battle-hardened men can be touched by love and forgiveness, and it's easier to face an enemy with a sword than to face the truth. When his moment of truth comes, what will Donatus choose, and what will that mean for all of them?

Описание: Abstract: The citrus blackfly, Aleurocanthus woglumi Ashby, is assumed to be a native of India, India and Pakistan, South Asia, Southern China, and Asia. Specimens were first received by USDA, Entomology, in 1910 from Maxwell-Lefroy in India. The first report of A. woglumi in the Western Hemisphere was made by Ashby in Jamaica in 1915. From here the citrus blackfly invaded other countries and now is widely distributed in the Western Hemisphere. The introduction of the natural enemies from Asia to the Western Hemisphere can be divided into 2 stages. The first stage began in 1930, with shipment of Eretmocerus serius from Malaya to Cuba, where it was successfully established and controlled the citrus blackfly. This parasite was later introduced into other countries of the Hemisphere. The second stage began in 1949, with the shipment of parasitized material from India and Pakistand to Mexico. Of the species of parasites received in Mexico, Amitus hesperidum, Prospaltella opulenta, and P. clypealis proved to be the most effective in the control of the pest and were later introduced into other countries of the Hemisphere. After being found and eradicated by means of chemical applications from Florida (1937) and Texas (1955), the citrus blackfly reinvaded Texas in 1967 and Florida in 1976. It proved unfeasible, if not impossible, to eradicate these infestations, and both are now effectivelly controlled by parasites. Parasites have provided highly satisfactory control in all infested countries where they have been introduced. When earlier control seemed to break down (Jamaica), the situation was corrected by introduction of a second species of parasite. In Mexico, where adverse climatic or cultural factors cause sporadic local outbrakes, control is reestablished by reintroducing parasite from localities where they are abundant. In Venezuela, A. woglumi was first found in 1967 at San Antonio del Tachira and was first observed in Barquisimeto in 1968. By 1974, the citrus blackfly was widespread through all the country. The first shipment of Prospaltella opulenta from Mexico was received in 1975. Additional shipments were received in June 1976, and positive evidence of establishment was obteined between June and September. Beginning November 11, 1976, egg, nymphal, pupal and adult stages of the citrus blackfly were sampled at 3 citrus grove locations. The sample procedure included standardized leaf counts for the inmature stages. Adult populations were determined by visual counts. Leaf samples included square centimeter counts and were compared with whole leaf counts in an effort to establish reliability of the less laborious square inch method showing high correlation coefficients. Mortality factors were identified in the field as well as in the leaf samples; however, the combined effect of these observed and suspected mortality factors did not prevent the increase of citrus blackfly populations when more favorable conditions returned. After the release of P. opulenta the number of dead citrus blackflies increased as an effect of parasite host feeding as well as by stinging activity of the female parasite that fails to result in parasite development. Cales sp., a native parasite, probably played an important role as a host of the male P. opulenta which develops as secondary parasite and thus hastened the establishment and colonization of P. opulenta. As the introduced parasite increased to a level having a measurable effect on the host population, Cales sp. was displaced as a parasite of A. woglumi. The increase of the P. opulenta population was followed and its impact on the host population established. Complete biological control was achieved in 18 months after P. opulenta was released in the Central- Western region of Venezuela. Scandinavia is a region associated with modernity: modern design, modern living and a modern welfare state. This new history of modernism in Scandinavia offers a picture of the complex reality that lies behind the label: a modernism made up of many different figures, impulses and visions. It places the individuals who have achieved international fame, such as Edvard Munch and Alvar Aalto in a wider context, and through a series of case studies, provides a rich analysis of the art, architecture and design history of the Nordic region, and of modernism as a concept and mode of practice.
Modernism in Scandinavia addresses the decades between 1890 and 1970 and presents an intertwined history of modernism across the region. Charlotte Ashby gives a rationale for her focus on those countries which share an interrelated history and colonial past, but also stresses influences from outside the region, such as the English Arts and Crafts movement and the impact of emergent American modernism. Her richly illustrated account guides the reader through key historical periods and cultural movements, with case studies illuminating key art works, buildings, designed products and exhibitions.
Описание: Portugals European Union honeymoon has officially ended. It was the victim of a Europe-wide political and financial crisis and an unstable EU identity increasingly splintered along regional and economic fractures. What does this mean for the former good student of European democracy? The answer may lie in renewed Portuguese efforts to deepen and strengthen ties with Lusophone countries across the globe, which since 1996 have been organized into a supranational organization called the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP). While Portugals marginality in relation to Europe might be emphasized in the corridors of Brussels, within the realm of the CPLP the former world power can once again see itself as existing at the center geographically as well as from a historic-cultural perspective of an extensive international milieu. The Lusophone World: The Evolution of Portuguese National Narratives explores the dialectic between Portugals sense of identity and belonging in the EU and the CPLP. It provides an analysis of the manner in which Portugals institutional allegiances to both of these organizations have impacted the political, economic, and social fabric of the nation. The fact that Portugal is turning to its former colonies as alternate partners in trade, commerce, emigration, and development initiatives may not be evidence of straightforward estrangement from the European continent. More likely, Portugal appears to be riding a fresh wave of what it means to be modern in the European milieu. This new concept of modernity, related to rhetoric of hybridity and a self-professed position as interlocutor, could be evidence of a deeper understanding of the new tools needed to survive and prosper in a rapidly-changing European Union.

Описание: A guide to all aspects of experimental design and data analysis for fMRI experiments, completely revised and updated for the second edition.
Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), which allows researchers to observe neural activity in the human brain noninvasively, has revolutionized the scientific study of the mind. An fMRI experiment produces massive amounts of highly complex data for researchers to analyze. This book describes all aspects of experimental design and data analysis for fMRI experiments, covering every step--from preprocessing to advanced methods for assessing functional connectivity--as well as the most popular multivariate approaches. The goal is not to describe which buttons to push in the popular software packages but to help researchers understand the basic underlying logic, the assumptions, the strengths and weaknesses, and the appropriateness of each method.
The field of fMRI research has advanced dramatically in recent years, in both methodology and technology, and this second edition has been completely revised and updated. Six new chapters cover experimental design, functional connectivity analysis through the methods of psychophysiological interactions and beta-series regression, decoding using multi-voxel pattern analysis, dynamic causal modeling, and representational similarity analysis. Other chapters offer new material on recently discovered problems related to head movements, the multivariate GLM, meta-analysis, and other topics. All complex derivations now appear at the end of the relevant chapter to improve readability. A new appendix describes how to build a design matrix with effect coding for group analysis. As in the first edition, MATLAB code is provided with which readers can implement many of the methods described.
