Описание: Wastelanding tells the history of the uranium industry on Navajo land in the U.S. Southwest, asking why certain landscapes and the peoples who inhabit them come to be targeted for disproportionate exposure to environmental harm. Uranium mines and mills on the Navajo Nation land have long supplied U.S. nuclear weapons and energy programs. By 1942, mines on the reservation were the main source of uranium for the top-secret Manhattan Project. Today, the Navajo Nation is home to more than a thousand abandoned uranium sites. Radiation-related diseases are endemic, claiming the health and lives of former miners and nonminers alike. Traci Brynne Voyles argues that the presence of uranium mining on Diné (Navajo) land constitutes a clear case of environmental racism. Looking at discursive constructions of landscapes, she explores how environmental racism develops over time. For Voyles, the “wasteland,” where toxic materials are excavated, exploited, and dumped, is both a racial and a spatial signifier that renders an environment and the bodies that inhabit it pollutable. Because environmental inequality is inherent in the way industrialism operates, the wasteland is the “other” through which modern industrialism is established. In examining the history of wastelanding in Navajo country, Voyles provides “an environmental justice history” of uranium mining, revealing how just as “civilization” has been defined on and through “savagery,” environmental privilege is produced by portraying other landscapes as marginal, worthless, and pollutable.

Regina Petit's family has always been Umpqua, and living on the Grand Ronde reservation is all ten-year-old Regina has ever known. Her biggest worry is that Sasquatch may actually exist out in the forest. But when the federal government signs a bill into law that says Regina's tribe no longer exists, Regina becomes "Indian no more" overnight--even though she was given a number by the Bureau of Indian Affairs that counted her as Indian, even though she lives with her tribe and practices tribal customs, and even though her ancestors were Indian for countless generations.
With no good jobs available in Oregon, Regina's father signs the family up for the Indian Relocation program and moves them to Los Angeles. Regina finds a whole new world in her neighborhood on 58th Place. She's never met kids of other races, and they've never met a real Indian. For the first time in her life, Regina comes face to face with the viciousness of racism, personally and toward her new friends.
Meanwhile, her father believes that if he works hard, their family will be treated just like white Americans. But it's not that easy. It's 1957 during the Civil Rights Era. The family struggles without their tribal community and land. At least Regina has her grandmother, Chich, and her stories. At least they are all together.
In this moving middle-grade novel drawing upon Umpqua author Charlene Willing McManis's own tribal history, Regina must find out: Who is Regina Petit? Is she Indian? Is she American? And will she and her family ever be okay?

Описание: There are no new questions, just new situations. Mariam, Marta, and Eleazar were siblings with a common conundrum: just what were they supposed to be doing in life? Nothing seemed to be working out right. Mariam was getting too old to find a husband; she needed money, but how was she going to get it? Widowed Marta was running a tavern out of her home. And young Eleazar was attending secret anti-government meetings. Their lives intersect with Jesus and his disciples, but it's the potter in the shed down the hillside who guides them to Jesus and their purpose in life. Nearly two thousand years later, a young man asks the same question. Jack, a struggling businessman, longs to create the beautiful works of art that he sells to clients, but his father has stressed for years the risks of being a self-employed artist. Jack knows business is the logical way to go, but his heart pulls him back to the potter's wheel. On a holiday visit with his aunts, Jack rekindles a friendship with Mr. John, the local potter. The friendship evolves into a partnership. But is pottery all that Mr. John is selling? Two thousand years are not enough to separate this story of family, calling, and the ancient mystery of The Potter of Paradox. The fastest postpartum snap back story ever When Traci Thomas's boyfriend abandoned her and their unborn child, Thomas wanted to get even. Four weeks after the birth, she'd lost over fifty pounds. Within eight weeks, she had the muscle tone of a fitness model. Photos of Thomas's amazing transformation went viral, and soon Fox News called for an interview. She starred in fitness infomercials. She was an Internet star.
Thomas's smiling face in the photos of her remarkable, yet dangerously fast, postpartum recovery hid the sad truth: Thomas was depressed and angry. For years, she'd cycled through bad relationships. Through it all, she continued improving her own personal fitness, and became a successful personal trainer. It was the ultimate heartache, however, that pushed her to the breaking point. The physical and emotional pain she endured recovering her prebaby body ignited her career and gave her the strength to finally find personal fulfillment.
Diary of an Angry PregnantWoman is the story of how one woman channeled her frustration into real change. Part memoir, part guide to postpartum recovery, Thomas's story will inspire women everywhere to reclaim their emotional and physical health.
