Описание: This revised and expanded second edition covers USN and USMC squadrons that operated the Consolidated B-24 Liberator heavy bomber as the PB4Y-1 in the Pacific from early 1943 through September 1944 in the Central Pacific. Combat air crews consisted of eleven young men typically ages 18 to 26 led by a patrol plane commander in his early to mid-twenties. They flew alone on single-plane patrols often lasting ten or more hours. Alone on patrol there were no witnesses when an aircraft failed to return to base; they simply vanished, leaving little if any clues about their fate. Other aircrews sent to look for the missing would occasionally spot a deflated life raft floating or dye marker spreading across the water--evidence marking where a four-engine bomber and its crew had gone down.
Описание: This illustrated book covers the complete history of the United States Los Angeles class attack submarines from initial design and construction, through testing and trials, to its current operations. The nuclear-powered USS Los Angeles (SSN-668) class attack submarine represented the lead ship of the largest group of vessels constructed for the US Navy during the Cold War, and was purposefully designed for anti-submarine operations against the Soviets. Sixty-two boats were built and launched between 1976 and 1996, and the class continues to serve in force to this day. The exclusive and extensive photographic coverage of the boats interior is featured here for the first time. Details of the boats armament includes: four 21" bow-mounted torpedo tubes supporting the Mk 48 ADCAP torpedo series; Tomahawk (BGM-109) cruise missile; and Harpoon (UGM-84) anti-ship missile capability. The authors unprecedented access allows the reader a first time view of these submarines.

Описание: This book argues that President Warren Harding and his secretary of navy, Edwin Denby exercised unusual foresight in preparing the navy for a war against Japan. This revised edition adds new evidence from original documents provides invaluable details and insights into the lasting legacy of the Harding administration.
From the first "commando carriers" to the legendary Fearless class and the current generation, this title explores the capabilities, roles, and history of the Royal Navy's frontline amphibious assault ships.
Amphibious assault ships have been at the center of nearly all of Britain's expeditionary campaigns since World War II, from the Suez crisis of 1956 to operations as far afield as Borneo (1963-66), the Falklands (1982), Sierra Leone (2000) and Iraq (2003).
In major operations such as Suez and the Falklands, the use of amphibious assault ships was essential to the military success of the campaigns. The Suez Crisis saw two of the Royal Navy's former light fleet carriers converted into "commando carriers" to specialize in amphibious warfare. In the 1960s these were followed by the famous Fearless class ships - the first purpose-built amphibious assault ships in the Royal Navy. With an internal dock, headquarters capability, and multiple landing craft, these "Landing Platform Docks" were built to project power around the world. When the Falklands were invaded, HMS Fearless was the key to the successful landing in San Carlos.
In the 1990s, a new generation was ordered: the helicopter carrier HMS Ocean and the Albion class LPDs. In recent years Ocean, Albion and Bulwark have been the largest fighting ships of the Royal Navy and have acted as the navy's flagships, as well as being perhaps the most versatile ships in the navy.
This title is an essential guide to British Amphibious Assault Ships across the decades, from the mighty Fearlessto the modern Albion. Packed with full-color illustrations, contemporary photography, and detailed analysis, this definitive work explores the history, development, and deployment of the Royal Navy's front line.
A More Fearless Youth is a multi-disciplinary cultural study of the teenagers and young adults who fought in the island battles of the Pacific War, 1941-45. A classic case of "youth in crisis," these young men, mostly from the urban working class or the farm, were essentially learning-by-doing as they sailed into combat. Growing up in the Progressive Era, they were molded by their education and experience for a type of amphibious warfare never before attempted. The social and cultural movements that shaped them, the popular culture that nourished them, and the government and military policies that sent them on a do-or-die mission are embodied in this unique story of civilians drawn into a brutal war.
Drawing extensively on unpublished and self-published eyewitness accounts from veterans, as well as interviews with survivors and their families, the book reconstructs a portrait of the recruits' lives, before, during, and after the war. Citing newspapers, popular magazines, film, novels and poems, family and special interest websites, government archives, and museum artifact and photographic collections, the author analyzes the ways family history and popular history are constructed, particularly in opposition to official history.
The book begins as a tribute to a family member who died in the war, and quickly grows into an investigation of the history of a generation. However, to understand how personal tragedies were submerged by the silence surrounding The Good War, Anderson chronicles his extended family's losses in the war, uncovering how the living and deceased veterans are both forgotten and remembered.

Описание: Originally developed as a swamp rescue vehicle by millionaire philanthropists Donald and John Roebling, the LVT (Landing Vehicle, Tracked), or "Alligator," was widely used in the Allied island-hopping campaign in the Pacific during World War II. Powered by a mammoth aircraft-type engine, the LVT(4) could cross treacherous coral reefs, deep water, and swamps to land troops ashore. The LVT(4) also introduced the rear ramp, which when lowered allowed troops to rush out, rather than clamber over the tall sides as on previous models. Produced by Food Machinery Corporation (FMC), railway equipment manufacturer St. Louis Car Company, and automobile maker Graham-Paige, over 8,000 LVT(4)s were built during the war; today only a few remain. Through dozens of archival photos as well as detailed photographs of some of the finest existent examples of these vehicles, this iconic landing vehicle is explored, and its history is explained.
