The author describes his life growing up in the village of Garelochhead in the West of Scotland at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century. What emerges is an engaging account of the whole way of life of the community in that period. He has made valuable observations of the prevailing customs then, some of which are surprising. For example, the village shops were open until 11.00 pm on Saturdays, a sports day was held on 1st January, and he touches on various aspect of life, food, dress, school etc.
William Hamilton was a noted beekeeper and for much of his life he lectured on the subject. He was very interested in natural history and he records encounters with wildlife which has long ago vanished from the area, e.g., red squirrels, corncrakes, and kingfishers.
He describes the importance of the Clyde steamers to the people of the Gareloch during his childhood particularly prior to the arrival of the West Highland Railway and recalls the several companies which served the Gareloch.
People of the village figure prominently in his recollections, notably the several benefactors who contributed to the welfare of the people. The existence of a strong community spirit at that time is very evident.

All those interested in the Anglo-Sikh Wars will be familiar with the services of the 31st (Huntingdonshire) Regiment of Foot, for it had served during the First Afghan War and, when the Sikhs of the Punjab opposed the British Empire in 1845, it formed part of Gough's force. The regiment notably fought at the battles of Mudki, Ferozeshah, Aliwal and Sobraon. In the Crimean War it fought at Sebastopol. The author of this book (originally published as 'Personal Adventures and Anecdotes of an Old Officer') served with the regiment and has written an essential, riveting and invaluable record of his experiences during these campaigns. Later in his career he formed a military train, which was, of necessity, converted to a cavalry regiment to serve in the Indian Mutiny of 1857 . The author also records those campaign experiences as a cavalryman with equal clarity and drama. Robertson's book is a brilliant autobiography of a British soldier at war in three of the most notable conflicts of the Victorian age and is recommended. Contains illustrations and maps not present in the original edition.

Two eyewitness accounts of the disaster of Kut and after
The First World War as it was fought in Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq) against the Ottoman Turkish Empire has received considerably less attention from British historians than other aspects of that conflict. While this was indisputably a 'side show theatre' of the greater struggle, it was nevertheless a difficult campaign, fought in an unforgiving landscape, often in punishing heat where disease took a greater toll of life than bullets. Most notably for the Allies it brought about a crushing defeat in the siege and fall of Kut which has become a stain on British military history in consequence of the treatment of prisoners of war by the Turks after the surrender. This book contains two first-hand accounts by Indian Army officers. These accounts are quite different but together they give an excellent insight into the experiences of those who defended Kut. The first account takes the reader through the actions (including the Battle of Ctesiphon) which led to the occupation of Kut in 1915, and graphically through the traumatic days when the besieged garrison fought to hold on until the relief column arrived. The second account continues the story as troops were marched into captivity. The author in company with a small party of companions decided to escape and his account of their bid for freedom makes for fascinating and thrilling reading.

Aghamore, Co. Mayo during the War years. "Most of the grown-ups in my time had learnt how to ride a bicycle, and so bicycles were fairly plentiful. However the period of which I speak was during the Second World War years, and so bicycles and parts for them became scarce and most expensive. Those who had wealth could always find a good bicycle to buy, but the poor had to improvise. I remember seeing bicycles parked outside the church with pedals made of a square piece of wood. Tyres too had to be invented to match the new circumstance. Sometimes little discs of old tyres were strung together with wire rather like a string of daisies, and these, when fitted on the bicycle wheels, acted as solid tyres. Others used to twist a rope of hay and wrap it around the rim of the wheels and then fit an old tyre on over the hay rope. Somehow we all learnt how to ride a bicycle, and the burning ambition of most young people was to have a bicycle of their own. The first bicycle that I owned was a fairly basic model. It had two good wheels and a new chain, and one good brake. Extravagances like handgrips or carriers were not essential. Later I graduated to a bicycle with a three-speed gear and a hub dynamo.
Very soon the days of the bicycle were over. Bright colours or even five-speed gears did not satisfy. The bicycles were abandoned under the hedges to rot away and everybody aspired to have at least one motor car in the household. I must admit that like the rest of men I too succumed to the craze of the motor car."
And so begins this storybook of nostalgic recollections of what it was like to grow up in rural Co. Mayo during the War years. Another gem from Joe Coen following on from the equally-charming, "Two Dry Sods - Tales from Old Mayo".
