Описание: On the South Western Frontier The California Column Frontier Service During the Rebellion Kit Carson's Fight With the Comanche and Kiowa Indians Union men against rebels and Indians in the South West The story of the California Column is one of the most remarkable of the American Civil War. Whilst the war was one of a nation divided, each side was not a geographical whole. Much of the war was fought in the east but the vastness of the continent meant that both sides held territory far to the West, separated from their principal forces and seats of government by the American wilderness. In 1862 a force of Union volunteers marched some 900 miles from California to take the war to the Confederacy in New Mexico and western Texas. At the time it was the longest march ever attempted through desert by the U.S Army. Inevitably this incursion into the wild lands of the frontier brought the force into contact and collision with another enemy-the fierce warriors of the Indians of the south western plains. The author of this book was a serving officer of the California Column and he left three separate pieces about his experiences, which have been gathered together in this single volume special Leonaur edition. Of special note is the detailed account of the action now known as the First Battle of Adobe Walls. Near the site of the epic siege by buffalo hunters against Quanah Parker after the war, California Column troops under the command of the legendary Kit Carson held off a vastly numerically superior force of Comanches and Kiowas. Pettis was in command of the units howitzers and it is considered that his actions and the influence of artillery probably saved the Union force from annihilation. Available in softcover and hardcover with dustjacket.

Описание: Although the British government declared its neutrality during the American Civil War, London nevertheless became an important center of Confederate overseas operations. This work examines the extensive Confederate activities in London during the war, including diplomacy, propaganda, purchasing for the Army and Navy, spying, Cotton Loan, and various business associations; reflections of the Civil War in British art and literature; and the extent of British support for the South. Appendices cover London firms with Confederate links, pro-Confederate publications, Confederate music published in London, the Southern lobby in Parliament, the Southern Independence Association, and the British Jackson Monumental Fund. The work also includes a chronology of events and a gazetteer of Confederate sites in London.

Описание: Loreta Janeta Velazquez was the daughter of a Spanish official living in Cuba. As a young girl she was sent to school in New Orleans, where she ran away and married a U.S. Army officer. After the outbreak of the war, she persuaded her husband to renounce his commission and to join the Confederate forces. After he was killed in battle, Velazquez disguised herself as a man so that she could serve, eventually doing so as an officer, a spy, and a blockade runner. The Woman in Battle tells the amazing story of Velazquez's experiences in a male-dominated world, offering a unique perspective on life as a soldier and detailing her many adventures, including fighting in the First Battle of Bull Run and Shiloh, where she was allegedly wounded. Upon the book's publication in 1876, its veracity was questioned, and it continues to be debated by contemporary historians to this day.

This booklet is a report on and an analysis of the Confederate Secret Service. Any errors or misinterpretations of referenced sources are strictly those of the author. The author is an experienced intelligence officer, but he also harbors the caution of a typical intelligence analyst and knows that there is always more to know.
My interest in this topic stems from both my intelligence career and from research of family history/genealogy which begun in 1983. The genealogy reveals that ancestors served in nearly every conflict starting with the American Revolution. That family military tradition continues in the current generation with two sons who are serving as officers of US Marines.
