Описание: This book fills a noticeable gap in Forsyth studies. It provides readers interested in the thought of Forsyth with a way of reading and critiquing his corpus, and that in a way that takes due account of, and elucidates, the theological, philosophical and historical locale of his thought. Goroncy explores whether the notion of ‘hallowing' provides a profitable lens through which to read and evaluate Forsyth's soteriology. He suggests that the hallowing of God's name is, for Forsyth, the way whereby God both justifies himself and claims creation for divine service. This book proposes that reading Forsyth's corpus as essentially an exposition of the first petition of the Lord's Prayer is an invitation to better comprehend not only his soteriology but also, by extension, his broader theological vision and interests.

Описание: What is the place of the cross in the thought of the third evangelist? This book seeks to show the central significance of the death of Jesus for Luke's understanding of (1) how salvation is accomplished and (2) what it means for Jesus to be the messiah. Whereas previous authors have helpfully attended to individual motifs within Luke's account of the passion, this book takes more of a wide-angle approach to the topic, moving from the very first allusions to Jesus' rejection at the beginning of Luke's gospel all the way through to the retrospective references to Jesus' death that occur throughout the speeches of Acts. By focusing on the inter-relationship of the various parts that form the whole of the Lukan portrayal of Jesus' death, Wilson proposes fresh solutions to several of the intractable exegetical disputes related to the place of the cross in Lukan theology, thereby helping to situate Lukan soteriology within the broader context of Jewish and Christian belief and practice in the first century.

This World and the World to Come: Soteriology in Early Judaism

Описание: Did authors of Second Temple texts concern themselves with 'salvation'? If so, on what terms? What does one need 'salvation' from? Are the parameters of who is included in or excluded from 'salvation' defined? Gurtner's vision in compiling this collection is to gather contributions on a single topic as it is addressed in individual books from the Second Temple period. Working from a sound methodological basis the contributors assess the theme in different books, acknowledging that the approaches in each text are different, depending on issues of genre and provenance. This allows an acute comparison of how this topic is present across a myriad of Second Temple Jewish texts. Throughout the course of the work the notion of "soteriology" is very broadly conceived. Whilst acknowledging the obviously Christian connotation of the term 'soteriology' the volume similarly acknowledges the usefulness of the term as an heuristic category for careful analysis.

Описание: Building on fundamental re-evaluations of literature and religion in Rome in recent years, this study explores Cicero`s innovative roles in debates about deification. By considering Cicero`s works in their broader cultural contexts, it tracks changing concepts of death and the afterlife, and re-examines the backgrounds to ruler worship at Rome.

Описание:

There is now a substantial scholarly consensus for the emergence of a high or divine Christology very early and from a Jewish context, but the questions of "how" and "why" need further study. Within the framework of traditional Jewish monotheism, Paul and other early Christians used the language of deity to describe Jesus. To investigate their view of Jesus, the author examines Paul's discourse in 2 Cor 3:16-4:6, employing insights from rhetorical criticism and Oneness Pentecostal Christology. He explains how early Christians proclaimed the deity of Jesus within their monotheistic Jewish context. He then identifies socio-rhetorical reasons for and practical consequences of the monotheistic deification of Jesus.

"The status quaestionis established by the likes of Bauckham, Hurtado, and Dunn among others may be taken for granted by those working in the field of biblical studies but their reception by Oneness scholars is sure to demand rethinking of the paradigmatic Nicene tradition and its interpretive assumptions that will have reverberations not only for the next generation of theologians but also for anyone interested in the christologies of the earliest followers of Jesus the Messiah. Kudos to David Bernard for his encyclopedic research, cogent analyses, and painstaking and measured argumentation that marks the emerging maturation of the Oneness Pentecostal academy."--Amos Yong, Professor of Theology & Mission, Fuller Theological Seminary

David K. Bernard, D.Th. 2015, University of South Africa, is president and professor of biblical theology at Urshan Graduate School of Theology. He is the author of over 30 books on Pentecostal theology, history, and life. He and his wife, Connie, founded New Life Church of Austin, Texas, out of which 16 additional churches were started under their leadership.
