Описание: This book presents the most important fault-tolerant distributed programming abstractions and their associated distributed algorithms, in particular in terms of reliable communication and agreement, which lie at the heart of nearly all distributed applications. These programming abstractions, distributed objects or services, allow software designers and programmers to cope with asynchrony and the most important types of failures such as process crashes, message losses, and malicious behaviors of computing entities, widely known under the term 'Byzantine fault-tolerance'. The author introduces these notions in an incremental manner, starting from a clear specification, followed by algorithms which are first described intuitively and then proved correct. The book also presents impossibility results in classic distributed computing models, along with strategies, mainly failure detectors and randomization, that allow us to enrich these models. In this sense, the book constitutes an introduction to the science of distributed computing, with applications in all domains of distributed systems, such as cloud computing and blockchains. Each chapter comes with exercises and bibliographic notes to help the reader approach, understand, and master the fascinating field of fault-tolerant distributed computing.

Описание: This book provides insight into the challenges in providing data authentication over wireless communication channels. The authors posit that established standard authentication mechanisms – for wired devices – are not sufficient to authenticate data, such as voice, images, and video over wireless channels. The authors propose new mechanisms based on the so-called soft authentication algorithms, which tolerate some legitimate modifications in the data that they protect. The authors explain that the goal of these algorithms is that they are tolerant to changes in the content but are still able to identify the forgeries. The authors go on to describe how an additional advantage of the soft authentication algorithms is the ability to identify the locations of the modifications and correct them if possible. The authors show how to achieve this by protecting the data features with the help of error correcting codes. The correction methods are typically based on watermarking, as the authors discuss in the book.
Provides a discussion of data (particularly image) authentication methods in the presence of noise experienced in wireless communication;Presents a new class of soft authentication methods, instead of the standard hard authentication methods, used to tolerate minor changes in image data;Features authentication methods based on the usage of authentication tags as well as digital watermarks.
Chapter1: Introduction and the Need for Noise Tolerant Data Authentication.- Chapter2: Wireless Communications.- Chapter3: Noise Tolerant Data Authentication Mechanisms.- Chapter4: Digital Watermarking Techniques.- Chapter5: Dual Watermarking with Error Correction.- Chapter6: Enhanced Decoding based on Authenticating the Region of Interests.- Chapter7: Authentication with Block Level Error Localization.
Описание: This brief introduces game- and decision-theoretical techniques for the analysis and design of resilient interdependent networks. It unites game and decision theory with network science to lay a system-theoretical foundation for understanding the resiliency of interdependent and heterogeneous network systems. The authors pay particular attention to critical infrastructure systems, such as electric power, water, transportation, and communications. They discuss how infrastructure networks are becoming increasingly interconnected as the integration of Internet of Things devices, and how a single-point failure in one network can propagate to other infrastructures, creating an enormous social and economic impact. The specific topics in the book include:· static and dynamic meta-network resilience game analysis and design;· optimal control of interdependent epidemics spreading over complex networks; and· applications to secure and resilient design of critical infrastructures. These topics are supported by up-to-date summaries of the authors’ recent research findings. The authors then discuss the future challenges and directions in the analysis and design of interdependent networks and explain the role of multi-disciplinary research has in computer science, engineering, public policy, and social sciences fields of study. The brief introduces new application areas in mathematics, economics, and system and control theory, and will be of interest to researchers and practitioners looking for new approaches to assess and mitigate risks in their systems and enhance their network resilience. A Game- and Decision-Theoretic Approach to Resilient Interdependent Network Analysis and Design also has self-contained chapters, which allows for multiple levels of reading by anyone with an interest in game and decision theory and network science.

Описание: This exciting book explores motivation, characteristics, and examples how network application engineers benefit from new store-and-forward protocols. The motivating factors that caused delay tolerant networks (DTNs) to be standardized are discussed, as well as the unique nature of applications running within a DTN. The underpinnings of DTN development are explored, including space-basednetworking, Internet of Things communications, and delayed-overlays as a means of achieving quality-of-service. Topics such as RESTful interfaces and research into autonomy and open-loop systems are discussed. The motivation and design of DTNs is addressed, along with design patterns and examples of delay-tolerant application development and deployment. Cases involving terrestrial Internet encounters problems, like those that define challenged networks, are identified and standard solutions to those problems are presented. Readers learn how to cache content in the network, perform open-loop autonomous control of nodes, annotate messages to reduce traffic needs, perform distributed error correction, in-network data fusion, and regional administration. Special considerations unique to DTNs that must be accommodated by delay-tolerant applications, examples of using these patterns, and a case study for their deployment are also included. This book is intended as a resource for network engineers, systems engineers, and communication system architectures to use in the specification, design, implementation, and verification of advanced, high reliability networks.
