Описание: It could be said that Davie County, North Carolina, entered the Civil War only reluctantly. As late as February of 1861, a statewide ballot calling for a convention on secession had been defeated by a relatively small margin of votes. In Davie County, however, some 754 people voted against the convention, with only 263 in favor. Yet despite the initial opposition, an enormous number of Davie County men signed up to fight. Out of a population of 6,000, more than 1,200 men served in the Confederate forces, three-fourths of them volunteers. This book seeks to identify every man who either served in a Davie County company or who left Davie County to enlist in another county and to provide as much information as possible concerning each man's military and genealogical history.

Описание: The 16th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry was one of a few Massachusetts regiments whose history was not recorded. From 1861-1864, it was deeply embroiled in the operations of the Army of the Potomac. Suffering from a lack of skilled leadership and later from horrific living conditions, the 16th saw heavy casualties. Of more than 1300 men, 112 were killed in battle, 360 were wounded and 52 died from their wounds. Disease claimed 115 and 65 were taken as prisoners of war, 32 of them dying in Confederate prisons. Another 344 went home afflicted with wounds or disease as disability discharges. This comprehensive biographical sketch chronicles for the first time the story of the 16th Massachusetts and the lives of most of its men, with all available genealogical details provided.

Описание: This is the story of the men who fought and died in the 72nd New York Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. Part of Dan Sickles' famed Excelsior Brigade, the 72nd N.Y. served in all the major actions associated with the III Corps, losing one-fourth or more of the regiment in three different engagements. The 72nd New York Infantry in the Civil War is a ""brogans-up"" view of the war told in the words of the men who were there. Drawing on soldier's letters, diaries, memoirs (many unpublished or obscure) and official reports, this work follows these men from the exciting beginnings of recruitment, the boredom and frustrations of life policing the secessionist countryside of Southern Maryland, through to the eventual disbanding of the regiment in July of 1864 after being bled white at Williamsburg, The Peninsula, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and the Overland Campaign. The final chapter offers a brief account of many of the men's lives following the war. Included in the work are photographs, period illustrations, maps and an organisational chart. Additionally the roster is arranged by company with chronology of officers' service. This work is fully indexed with complete citations and bibliography.
