William Blake's work demonstrates two tendencies that are central to social media: collaboration and participation. Not only does Blake cite and adapt the work of earlier authors and visual artists, but contemporary authors, musicians, and filmmakers feel compelled to use Blake in their own creative acts. This book identifies and examines Blake's work as a social and participatory network, a phenomenon described as zoamorphosis, which encourages -- even demands -- that others take up Blake's creative mission. The authors rexamine the history of the digital humanities in relation to the study and dissemination of Blake's work: from alternatives to traditional forms of archiving embodied by Blake's citation on Twitter and Blakean remixes on YouTube, smartmobs using Blake's name as an inspiration to protest the 2004 Republican National Convention, and students crowdsourcing reading and instruction in digital classrooms to better understand and participate in Blake's world. The book also includes a consideration of Blakean motifs that have created artistic networks in music, literature, and film in the twentieth and the twenty-first centuries, showing how Blake is an ideal exemplar for understanding creativity in the digital age.

Описание: Over the past few decades, humanistic inquiry has been problematized and invigorated by the emergence of what is referred to as the digital humanities. Across multiple disciplines, from history to literature, religious studies to philosophy, archaeology to music, scholars are tapping the extraordinary power of digital technologies to preserve, curate, analyze, visualize, and reconstruct their research objects. The study of the Middle East and the broader Islamic world has been no less impacted by this new paradigm. Scholars are making daily use of digital tools and repositories including private and state-sponsored archives of textual sources, digitized manuscript collections, densitometrical imaging, visualization and modeling software, and various forms of data mining and analysis. This collection of essays explores the state of the art in digital scholarship pertaining to Islamic & Middle Eastern studies, addressing areas such as digitization, visualization, text mining, databases, mapping, and e-publication. It is of relevance to any researcher interested in the opportunities and challenges engendered by this changing scholarly ecosystem.
Описание: The arrival of the participatory web 2.0 has been hailed by many as a media revolution, bringing with it new tools and possibilities for direct political action. Through specialised online platforms, mainstream social media or blogs, citizens in many countries are increasingly seeking to have their voices heard online, whether it is to lobby, to support or to complain about their elected representatives. Politicians, too, are adopting "new media" in specific ways, though they are often criticised for failing to seize the full potential of online tools to enter into dialogue with their electorates. Bringing together perspectives from around the world, this volume examines emerging forms of citizen participation in the face of the evolving logics of political communication, and provides a unique and original focus on the gap which exists between political uses of digital media by the politicians and by the people they represent.
Описание: The study of intermediality explores the exchangeability of expressive means and aesthetic conventions between different art and media forms, a trend amplified and enabled by the digital age. It has become a powerful structuring concept in digital humanities, where traditional boundaries between disciplines as well as genres are being eroded. Contributors to this volume discuss the concepts of intermediality and digital humanities from a range of theoretical perspectives. While in the humanities, generally, there is continued focus on traditional textuality, this up-to-date collection demonstrates the explosive potential of new forms of hypermedia studies to transform our understanding of a range of genres.Contents: Literary Studies from Hermeneutics to Media Culture Studies; (Inter)mediality and the Study of Literature; Discourses and Models of Intermediality; Intermediality and Aesthetic Theory in Shklovsky's and Adorno's Thought; Intermediality, Translation, Comparative Literature, and World Literature; Making Sense of the Digital as Embodied Experience; The Metaphysics of Electronic Being; Video Games as Equipment for Living; Dialogue between Meaning Systems in Intermedial d104s; Intermediality and Human vs. Machine Translation; Intermediality, Rhetoric, and Pedagogy; Race and Gender Representations in Advertising in Cable Cartoon Programming; An Intermedial Reading of Paley's Sita Sings the Blues; Aesthetics, Nationalism, and the Image of Woman in Modern Indian Art; Towards a Multimodal Analysis of da Rimini's Dollspace; Intermedial Representations in Asian Macbeth-s; Innovation and Multimedia in the Poetry of cummings and Mayakovsky; Intermediality, Rewriting Histories, and Identities in French Rap; Intermediality as Cultural Literacy and Teaching the Graphic Novel; Comics and the Graphic Novel in Spain and Iberian Galicia; Qu(e)erying Comic Book Culture and Representations of Sexuality in Wonder Woman; Digital Media, 419, and the Politics of the Global Network; Media Icons of War and the Instrumentalization of Images in US-American Media; Political Deliberation and E-Participation in Policy-Making; Digital Humanities in Developed and Emerging Markets; Intermediality, Architecture, and the Politics of Urbanity; Intersubjectivity and Intermediality in the Work of Serra; Digital Humanities and a Case Study of (Inter)medial Participation; Bibliography for Work in Intermediality and Digital Humanities.
