Описание: How can we comprehend the sociopolitical processes that give rise to extreme violence, ethnic cleansing, and genocide? A major breakthrough in comparative analysis, Purify and Destroy demonstrates that it is indeed possible to compare the Holocaust, the Rwandan genocide, and ethnic cleansing in Bosnia-Herzegovina while respecting the specificities of each appalling phenomenon. Jacques Semelin achieves this, in part, by leading his readers through the three examples simultaneously. His method is multidisciplinary, relying not only on contemporary history but also on social psychology and political science. Based on the seminal distinction between massacre and genocide, Semelin identifies the main steps of a general process of destruction, both rational and irrational, born of what he terms "delusional rationality." He describes a dynamic structural model with, at its core, the matrix of a social imaginaire that, in responding to fears, resentments, and utopias, carves and recarves the social body by eliminating "the enemy." Finally, he develops an intellectual framework to analyze the entire spectrum of mass violence, including terrorism, in the twentieth century and before. Strongly critical of today`s political instrumentalization of the notion of "genocide," Semelin argues that genocide research should stand back from legal and normative definitions and come of age as its own discipline in the social sciences.

Описание: An envelope of charred military records launched the author on a 20-year journey across four continents to learn about his father and his comrades before, during, and after World War Two. The story of Sergeant Babinski's service is also the story of the Thirteenth Air Force - known as the Jungle Air Force during WWII. It is also the story of the 307th Bombardment Group (Heavy), known as the Long Rangers, one of the heavy bomber units that launched some of the first long distance attacks against Japanese controlled territory in 1942. The Long Rangers continued to set records by flying farther and longer than ever thought possible by the designers and builders of the B-24 Liberator bomber. The Flight of the Malfunction follows families as they escaped the Austrian Empire to industrial Detroit before WWI. This was an era when Ford, General Motors, and America created golden opportunities for hard-working families. But then the Great Depression tested them to the limit. Just as these families emerged from hard times, America was plunged into crisis again in 1941. Farm boys, factory workers, and kids just out of school came together when America called them to duty. Trained to use the most advanced military technology of the time, they were sent to the far corners of the world to fight the enemies of freedom. Young Walter Babinski entered the Army in 1943 and crisscrossed America to become an aircraft mechanic, an aerial gunner, and finally a ball-turret gunner on a B-24 Liberator bomber crew. This is a story of young men who came together as friends and then relied on each other for survival time after time. Assigned to the 307th Bomb Group (the Long Rangers) of the 13th Jungle Air Force on Guadalcanal, the crew of the Malfunction faced danger together. On one of their first missions, they almost killed a famous American pilot. Many times they saw their friends and comrades killed, and more than once they wondered how and why they survived. General MacArthur drove the 13th Air Force hard. He pushed them to new bases surrounded by the Japanese across the South Pacific. He asked his crews to do things with the B-24 that they were never designed to do. The crew of the Malfunction accomplished long lonely missions with courage, humor, and humility. And then they came back to family and friends to live quiet, meaningful lives. The Flight of the Malfunction was extensively researched with information from many published sources and previously classified combat plans and battle reports, as well as interviews with family members and many of Sergeant Babinski's comrades. - 8.5" x 11" - 417 Pages - Two Page Detailed Chronology - Two Page Map of the Southwest Pacific showing bases, targets, travels - Two other original full page maps - 11 Contemporary maps - 20 contemporary paintings by Sgt. Описание: A gripping, fascinating story - A gripping fascinating story, enhanced by the fact that the story is real and provides a full account of Dr. Horton's experiences being thrown into heavy combat after just a few months of training. Recommended reading for all. Survival against all odds - in the trenches of Vietnam - I still can't believe they get out of there alive - couldn't put it down. This first person narrative of hand-to-hand combat in the trenches of Vietnam left me scared, glad to be alive and eternally grateful to those who died for my freedom Could not put it down - A friend had mentioned this book to me. Once I received it I could not put it down. Jerry Horton joined the army to simply be able to afford to go to college. 40 years later he has a PHD and multiple degrees but they were earned at a heavy price for this patriot. Jerry shares his experiences in Vietnam in an articulate, honest and direct assessment of his time in Vietnam, the men he served with and the horrors of war. Incredible story of leadership and survival. Shake N Bake Sergeant aka Instant NCO - Jerry Horton absolutely nailed the life of a "Shake 'n Bake" Sergeant when he tells the story of dedicated soldiers trained at Fort Benning, GA and then follows them to Vietnam. This book is not only absolutely dead on accurate but gives the reader every aspect of what it was like to experience the war as a Shake 'n Bake Sergeant. Instant NCO's were trained for only one reason - to lead United States soldiers into combat and they did it with heroic efficiency and effectiveness with limited resources. This book is not just a home run - it is a Grand Slam. Interesting, accurate, full of suspense and you can't put it down. This book should be required reading for everyone so they can understand that Freedom is not Free. There is a cost and sometimes that cost is heavy. Horton brings it all across in a nonstop action format. It is a great read If you really want to know what it was like...This has to be the most realistic 'must read' book to come out of the VN war. If you ever read any book about this war - this is the one to read. You won't put it down and you won't ever forget it From the book's review by the late COL(R) David Hackworth (most-decorated Vietnam veteran): "In 1968, the U.S. Army was running out of sergeants in Vietnam. Throughout military history, as least as far back as the Revolutionary War, sergeants were the backbone of the Army. This shortage of sergeants meant disaster in Vietnam. The NCO candidate school was created to solve this serious problem by doing one thing - train soldiers to lead men in combat. It was modeled after the Officer's candidate school but streamlined to meet this critical need for leaders in half the time. Graduates were known by most as "Shake 'n Bake Sergeants" or "Instant NCOs" since they got their rank fast from going to school. This book is the first time this important part of American history has ever been published. It is the first time anyone has given credit to Shake 'n Bake Sergeants - a credit that they so greatly deserved. At the time there were many who said they would fail. It seemed many did not respect them even though all were destined for front line positions. The book documents how they proved their worth over and over again as front line infantry leaders even though for thirty some years their sacrifices have been unknown." An unforgettable mixture of vivid realism, poignant sadness and unexpected humor. Once you begin reading The Shake 'n Bake Sergeant, you will find it hard to put it down. Описание:

"If you judge a book by its cover, you might miss out on an amazing story."

Such is the case with Stubby, a homeless dog who could have been left for lost, but ended up saving countless lives in World War I and becoming the most decorated animal in American Military history. Stubby, a mix of Boston terrier and pit bull, was discovered, rescued, and taught by Private Robert Conroy and his colleagues, who were training for World War I at Yale University in 1917. Conroy smuggled Stubby aboard a transport ship to Europe with the U.S. 102nd Infantry, 26th Yankee Division. His commanding officer discovered the dog several days later and was quite displeased--until Stubby saluted the officer with his paw as the soldiers had trained him to do.

In the trench warfare of Europe, Stubby would bark to alert the regiment of surprise mustard gas attacks and incoming artillery fire, giving the soldiers time to grab their gas masks or hit the bottom of the trenches before a raid. Trained to differentiate between German and English speakers, Stubby would also locate wounded English-speaking soldiers in the trenches and bark until paramedics arrived. He even once caught a German spy.

Stubby braved through 17 WWI battles, saving countless Allied soldiers' lives through his actions. For his courage, he received many military honors and marched in the Victory Parade.

Why Did Sergeant Stubby Go to War? is Stubby's story, the second in a series of children's books about the amazing Unsung Heroes featured at the Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes in Fort Scott, Kansas. Through Stubby's story and those of other Unsung Heroes, the Center helps students, educators and communities recognize the value of each individual to effect positive change in the world.

Cathy Werling, the author, is an award-winning retired elementary educator. Her passion for helping students develop positive character traits and seek out worthy role models led to her part time work at the Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes. Through her series of books about these humble heroes, Cathy inspires elementary children to be those people who make a positive difference in the lives of others.
