It is 1902, and Inocencio Sanchez cant wait to open the Sanchez Bath House to the public in San Francisco. His dream is to promote healing for the bereaved. Theresa, his wife, runs the flower shop on the property, and their daughters, Candace and Vivien, enjoy the sea water pools.

Twenty years later, Inocencio has died and Candace, staying loyal to her fathers dream, advertises an All-Womens Swim Group she plans to teach at the small pool at the bathhouse.

Rose, a musician struggling with grief after the loss of her son, finds her way to the swim group while purchasing a bouquet of roses for her sons grave at the flower shop. I suppose Jacob would want me to swim here...

Lily is eight months pregnant and battling depression over losing her mother to a brain tumor. She tries hard to imagine how her mother would respond to her questions about her pregnancy, but only feels a deep silence. During one of her private walks, she comes across a curious flyer about the swim group.

No, thats not true No was Sunnys hysterical response to the horrible news of her 23-year-old sons suicide. Sunny and her husband, Danny, felt their lives explode into a million pieces. Through the patient efforts of Dannys sister, Sunny finds her way to the swim group.

Iris, the successful journalist, can no longer rely on her church group to provide her with the support she needs after the loss of her precious daughter, Cora. She has recently divorced and is searching for balance. On her way home one day, she stops at the Sanchez Bath House to inquire about the swim group.

Candaces gentle approach to the women in the group begins to create the healing atmosphere that her father dreamed of. The women continue to meet for years, and learn to live through their grief and accept the love and support they receive from each other.

Drawing upon a personal collection of more than 300 letters exchanged between her parents and other family members across the U.S.-Mexico border, Miroslava Chavez-Garcia recreates and gives meaning to the hope, fear, and longing migrants experienced in their everyday lives both ""here"" and ""there"" (aqui y alla). As private sources of communication hidden from public consumption and historical research, the letters provide a rare glimpse into the deeply emotional, personal, and social lives of ordinary Mexican men and women as recorded in their immediate, firsthand accounts. Chavez-Garcia demonstrates not only how migrants struggled to maintain their sense of humanity in el norte but also how those remaining at home made sense of their changing identities in response to the loss of loved ones who sometimes left for weeks, months, or years at a time, or simply never returned.

With this richly detailed account, ranging from the Mexican Revolution of the 1910s to the emergence of Silicon Valley in the late 1960s, Chavez-Garcia opens a new window onto the social, economic, political, and cultural developments of the day and recovers the human agency of much maligned migrants in our society today.

A powerful and accesible bilingual picture book that highlights "the power and impact of ordinary but dedicated citizens."*

Every day, thousands of farmworkers harvested the food that ended up on kitchen tables all over the country. But at the end of the day, when the workers sat down to eat, there were only beans on their own tables. Then Dolores Huerta and Cesar Chavez teamed up. Together they motivated the workers to fight for their rights and, in the process, changed history.

Award-winning author Monica Brown and acclaimed illustrator Joe Cepeda join together to create this stunning tribute to two of the most influential people of the twentieth century.

"I love that this book introduces Dolores and Cesar as children and connects their early life experiences to the decisions they made as they grew up," commented reviewer Maria Ramos-Chertok in the blog "Latinxs in Kid Lit." "Given that I longed for bilingual children's books when my two sons were growing up, I only wish I had known about this book earlier." She added that Side by Side offers opportunities to open discussions about work and career, feminism, and friendship, as well as a fresh perspective on history.
