Описание:

A new form of investigative practice that uses architecture as an optical device to investigate armed conflicts and environmental destruction.

In recent years, the group Forensic Architecture began using novel research methods to undertake a series of investigations into human rights abuses. Today, the group provides crucial evidence for international courts and works with a wide range of activist groups, NGOs, Amnesty International, and the UN. Forensic Architecture has not only shed new light on human rights violations and state crimes across the globe, but has also created a new form of investigative practice that bears its name. The group uses architecture as an optical device to investigate armed conflicts and environmental destruction, as well as to cross-reference a variety of evidence sources, such as new media, remote sensing, material analysis, witness testimony, and crowd-sourcing.

In Forensic Architecture, Eyal Weizman, the groups founder, provides, for the first time, an in-depthintroduction to the history, practice, assumptions, potentials, and double binds of this practice. The book includes an extensive array of images, maps, and detailed documentation that records the intricate work the group has performed. Traversing multiple scales and durations, the case studies in this volume include the analysis of the shrapnel fragments in a room struck by drones in Pakistan, the reconstruction of a contested shooting in the West Bank, the architectural recreation of a secret Syrian detention center from the memory of its survivors, a blow-by-blow account of a day-long battle in Gaza, and an investigation of environmental violence and climate change in the Guatemalan highlands and elsewhere.

Weizmans Forensic Architecture, stunning and shocking in its critical narrative, powerful images, and daring investigations, presents a new form of public truth, technologically, architecturally, and aesthetically produced. The practice calls for a transformative politics in which architecture as a field of knowledge and a mode of interpretation exposes and confronts ever-new forms of state violence and secrecy.

Описание: Images of Conviction shows, through 11 cases, how the photographic image is constructed to become evidence.
From the scientific methods developed by Alphonse Bertillon, a criminologist who worked for the Pr fecture de Police de Paris in the late 19th century, to the first aerial images of the front taken by the army during World War I, to the shots allowing the victims of Stalin's Great Purge to be identified--for over 150 years photography has served as proof, testifying to crime and thus seeming to deliver truths.
In the 11 cases presented here, each one situated within its historical and political context, the question of the status of images is acutely posed. Whether it be the famous shots of the Shroud of Turin, the images of the Nuremberg trial, the skull of Josef Mengele or photos taken with cell phones recording the damage of drone strikes in Afghanistan and Israel, forensic images are now part of any police or political investigation.

Описание:

Dust & Data brings together case studies by scholars from around the world that engage with the history of the Bauhaus as a series of entangled, internationally ramifying problems. One hundred years after the Bauhaus School's founding in 1919, this volume tells its story by interweaving the multiple historiographies of the Bauhaus with the global histories of modernist architecture.
Taking a selection of Bauhaus objects, documents and buildings as a starting point, Dust & Data then sets out to plot the complex patterns of circulation and migration these have traversed as they rippled outward from the Bauhaus. Following these emblematic objects on their travels, the authors chart the international reception and reinterpretation of the Bauhaus, as well as the challenges that face objects in motion--such as disputes and legal challenges concerning authenticity, physical and intellectual ownership and copyright.
Featuring contributions from international experts in design, architecture and art history such as Eyal Weizman, Alina Payne, Nicholas de Monchaux, Christopher T. Green, Pep Avil s, Persephone Allen, Anna Vallye, Anna Bokov, Daniel Taliesnik and Anna-Maria Meister, among others, this volume offers a truly global perspective on the history of the Bauhaus. Dust & Data excavates a history of the Bauhaus as a history of migration: of its architects, artists, documents, objects and, of course, its ideas, as they have scattered across a fragmented world.
