But Milagro is bewildered when she's excluded from a mysterious midnight ceremony whose participants include Oswald's hostile parents, a creepy family elder, and Milagro's ex-lover, decadent and powerful aristovamp Ian Ducharme. When Milagro's life is threatened, she flees to the desert to hide and work on a screenplay. Instead of solitude, she encounters an egomaniacal actor, a partying socialite, a sly tabloid reporter, and a lavish spa full of dark secrets. Now all she has to do is finish her screenplay, ambush a world domination movement, and overcome a terrible infection before she can make her way back to Casa Dracula. "A hilarious novel with plenty of colorful characters; Midnight Brunch will make you an instant Marta Acosta fan." -Fresh Fiction "Impeccable timing and rare wit... A] glorious madcap mystery of a ride." -Futures Mystery Anthology Magazine "Intelligence and fabulousity mixed into a delicious cocktail." -Marcela Landres, Latinidad
Thresholds of Illiteracy reevaluates Latin American theories and narratives of cultural resistance by advancing the concept of “illiteracy” as a new critical approach to understanding scenes or moments of social antagonism. “Illiteracy,” Acosta claims, can offer us a way of talking about what cannot be subsumed within prevailing modes of reading, such as the opposition between writing and orality, that have frequently been deployed to distinguish between modern and archaic peoples and societies. This book is organized as a series of literary and cultural analyses of internationally recognized postcolonial narratives. It tackles a series of the most important political/aesthetic issues in Latin America that have arisen over the past thirty years or so, including indigenism, testimonio, the Zapatista movement in Chiapas, and migration to the United States via the U.S.–Mexican border. Through a critical examination of the “illiterate” effects and contradictions at work in these resistant narratives, the book goes beyond current theories of culture and politics to reveal radically unpredictable forms of antagonism that advance the possibility for an ever more democratic model of cultural analysis.

Описание: "Sizzling and sexy, Acosta's latest is perfect for readers who like a little snappy satire in their vampire romances." -Booklist "Acosta's talent is staggering. In each of her Milagro de Los Santos novels, she shows readers all over again just how funny, ridiculous and thoroughly gifted she is at plotting. Top rated." -Romantic Times Chick Lit Plus Funny, flirty Milagro is having serious problems planning her wedding to fabulous Oswald Grant, MD and vampire. Her future in-laws loathe her, her dog just died, and then her extravagant friend Nancy hijacks the role of wedding coordinator. As if things aren't bad enough, the Vampire Council assigns conniving fashionista Cornelia Ducharme to supervise the couple through ancient wedding traditions. Meanwhile Milagro's reduced to ghostwriting the memoirs of a loony little man who claims to be a shapeshifter. A series of suspicious accidents interferes with the wedding plans. Is Milagro's paranoia justified or is she cracking under the pressure? And why does she keep running into her charismatic ex-lover, depraved aristovamp Ian Ducharme? "Milagro De Los Santos remains one of the most interesting characters I know, with her quick-wit, sharp tongue, and flirtatious manner. She demands full devotion from the reader, and with me she gets it." -The Spinecracker "The Bride of Casa Dracula is the fast-paced witty read that we have all come to enjoy from Marta Acosta. Yet it is much more than that...I am on pins and needles waiting for the next installment in one of my new favorite series." -Bitten By Books
