Описание: The transition to modern war at sea began during the period of the Sino-Japanese War (1894–1895) and the Spanish-American War (1898) and was propelled forward rapidly by the advent of the dreadnought and the nearly continuous state of war that culminated in World War I. By 1922, most of the elements that would define sea power in the 20th century were in place. Written by one of our foremost military historians, this volume acknowledges the complex nature of this transformation, focusing on imperialism, the growth of fleets, changes in shipbuilding and armament technology, and doctrines about the deployment and use of force at sea, among other factors. There is careful attention to the many battles fought at sea during this period and their impact on the future of sea power. The narrative is supplemented by a wide range of reference materials, including a detailed census of capital ships built during this period and a remarkable chronology of actions at sea during World War I.
Описание: In this second volume of his history of naval power in the 20th century, H. P. Willmott follows the fortunes of the established seafaring nations of Europe along with two upstarts—the United States and Japan. Emerging from World War I in command of the seas, Great Britain saw its supremacy weakened through neglect and in the face of more committed rivals. Britain's grand Coronation Review of 1937 marked the apotheosis of a sea power slipping into decline. Meanwhile, Britain's rivals and soon-to-be enemies were embarking on significant naval building programs that would soon change the nature of war at sea in ways that neither they nor their rivals anticipated. By the end of a new world war, the United States had taken command of two oceans, having placed its industrial might behind technologies that further defined the arena of naval power above and below the waves, where stealth and the ability to strike at great distance would soon rewrite the rules of war and of peace. This splendid volume further enhances Willmott's stature as the dean of naval historians.

Описание:
The Battle of Leyte Gulf was the greatest naval engagement in history. The battle was four separate actions, none of which were fought in the Gulf itself, and the result was the destruction of Japanese naval power in the Pacific. This book is a detailed and comprehensive account of the fighting from both sides. It provides the context of the battle, most obviously in terms of Japanese calculations and the search for "a fitting place to die" and "the chance to bloom as flowers of death." Using Japanese material never previously noted in western accounts, H. P. Willmott provides new perspectives on the unfolding of the battle and very deliberately seeks to give readers a proper understanding of the importance of this battle for American naval operations in the following month. This careful interrogation of the accounts of "the last fleet action" is a significant contribution to military history.

Описание:
Global Warming is a complex thriller with Garry Willmott's trademark mix of fact, fiction and projection. From the death of one man, pilot Ericson, the story builds to a tsunami of blackmail, terrorism, compromise and revenge... and that's before the Russian mafia gets in on the act If you've enjoyed Garry's other novels, you'll love Global Warming. Just hold on to your hats and watch out for AK47s. - Sally Odgers, author.
Garry Willmott's latest book Global Warming is a ripping yarn of espionage and high adventure that stretches from one side of the globe to another. It is a David and Goliath story in every sense and highlights the vulnerability of the world's smaller more independent countries to the impacts of environmental change. It is Mr Willmott's obsession with detail which provides so much interest and authenticity in his writings. Not unlike the Da Vinci Code, underpinning the sometimes-frenetic pace, there are twists and turns, shocks, surprises and mishaps. - Cenred Harmsworth, recording artist.
Based on a plausible premise Garry has interspersed the drama with well-researched and poignant facts making the story quite thought provoking. The story continues to build well with many twists and turns and a few surprises along the way. I found the book highly entertaining the plot easy to follow and an all-round good read. This story is a must-read for any fan of the thriller/drama genre. Although a work of fiction, this should be read by the world's major polluters (listed within the book); there is a warning here that is not entirely implausible given the current political upheavals and voter shifts seen throughout the globe. - Martin Humphries
Global Warming, a book of intrigue, thought provoking facts and ideas, with many twists and turns. For the author, Garry Willmott, this is a totally new subject matter, one which encourages much debate and thought about human tragedy. It is exciting, thought-provoking and imaginative, with a killer ending. I totally recommend. - Ian Jones
