Описание: The Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, and the wide-open desert may stand out as prominent Southwest features, but this region is also home to bizarre places, personalities, events, and phenomena. These unique and quirky aspects are humorously displayed in Southwest Curiosities, a cross between a wacky news gazette, an almanac, and a humorous travel guide. Amusing stories and unique black and white photographs make this the perfect read for travelers, residents, and anyone interested in adventure and a good laugh. Southwest Curiosities is part of a GPP homegrown series of state-specific books that describe, with humor and affection--and a healthy dose of attitude--the oddest, quirkiest, and most outlandish places, personalities, events, and phenomena found within the state's borders and in the chronicles of its history. The series provides a fun and accessible read for travelers and non travelers alike--a great armchair book with quirky black and white photographs throughout and maps for each region.
Extraordinary turns of event from inside the walls of a pretzel shop
Pat Long's pretzel shop, Pretzel Land, is in the heart of Amish Country and puts her in contact with all sorts of people on a daily basis. Some are the salt of the earth (no pun intended) and others get all tied up in knots (OK, pun intended) being less than nice.
From the hilarious (Amish hip-hop dancer, anyone? Or how about the four-year-old who sang along with Queen's "Fat Bottom Girls"?) to the absurd (such as a guest who thinks she possesses the power of invisibility)--and all the cases of mistaken identity and foul-mouthed customers in between--this book paints a lively picture of humankind at its best and worst.
Some of these anecdotes will make you laugh, others will make you groan, and a few may just give your tear ducts a workout. So, sit back with your favorite snack (Would you like some cheese dip with that? How about a lemonade?) and enjoy these missives from deep inside her Pretzel Land
Pat was born in Baltimore, but eventually made her way to Central Pennsylvania and settled in for many years. After graduating in 1992 from Lycoming College with a degree in English and a New Testament Greek minor (yeah, very useful) she dedicated her early career to social services. Pat worked for Special Olympics Pennsylvania for a decade, overseeing volunteers all over the state and really hitting on her passion for sports and her compassion for the developmentally disabled. She married her partner in 2008 and began working for the American Cancer Society as a patient services advocate. In 2011, it was time to make a change, and she purchased a pretzel store in sleepy little Berks County, Pennsylvania.

Artie Bennett directs his gaze downward now to deliver the final word on feet. In well-crafted, hilarious verses that teem with facts and fun, Artie identifies the parts of the foot, the unique adaptations of assorted animal feet, the largest human feet ever, and much, much more.
Mike Moran, acclaimed illustrator of Poopendous , puts his best foot forward with uproarious artwork that both enlightens and delights. Feet have never been in better hands
There's even a two-page fact spread, "Feet Notes," for those eager to jump into this fascinating subject with both feet. What's Afoot is guaranteed to knock your socks off
Artie and Mike collaborated earlier on Poopendous , about which the Huffington Post crowed, "It appears there is no topic Mr. Bennett can't make funny and educational." And the Bay Weekly said, "Bennett's rhymes and Mike Moran's colorful cartoonish illustrations make the book a joy for kids and adults."
Vermont. . . Who Knew? is a nonfiction travel book, including both serious and humorous content. It comprises nine chapters--one with a state-wide focus and eight regional chapters. The result: 125 or so profiles, essays, and anecdotes encompassing the most unique people, places, and events--both past and present--the Green Mountain State has to offer. The product is a perfect-bound, 6.14" x 9.21," 256-page book ( 65, 000 words), in color and including 75 photos and nine full-page chapter-opener maps. The Foreword was written by U. S. Senator Bernie Sanders. Wilson McLeran, Inc. is the publisher.
One unique feature: Roughly 70 percent of the entries are followed by references to one or more short YouTube videos, providing additional--and often dramatic--sight-and-sound coverage based on the topics immediately preceding. No URLs are necessary. Videos are accessed with a single click after the three- or four-word citation title is entered into the YouTube search box. Pairing the book's words with a PC or mobile device, then, transforms Vermont. . . Who Knew? from merely a good read to an unforgettable multimedia experience
Another feature: For families with time constraints of one kind or another, a single back-of-the-book appendix serves as a two-dimensional global positioning system. Locations for many of the book's entries are on four well-traveled Vermont roads (two east-west and two north-south)--all within ten miles of any one of the highways. Based on preferences, this offers an opportunity to easily organize one- or two-day itineraries.
