Описание: "i closed my eyes to look inward and found a universe waiting to be explored"
The external pressures faced by Christians in the marketplace in Asia are the same as those faced by Christians worldwide. Few of us have sufficient inner spiritual strength and pastoral support to deal with the relentless power of sin as manifested in the corporate world. Increasingly, too, in a globalised economy, there is a need for Christians in the West to understand the ramifications of working in Asia.
This short book is one attempt to respond to the need to help Christians in Asia find a biblical response to the real pressures they face in the marketplace. It takes seriously both the Scriptures and the context in which Asian Christians function. In order to provide a holistic look at the issues involved, Bribery and Corruption begins with a theological framework for grappling with real-time problems, continues with responses from various theologians on the framework presented, and concludes with actual case studies from the marketplace.

Описание: Korean and Korean American Life Writing in Hawai'i examines such self-representing genres as lyric poems, oral history, autobiography, and memoirs written by Korean and Korean Americans from the early twentieth century to the present, in order to explore how these people have shaped their individual or collective identities. Their representations, produced in different periods by successive generations, reveal how Koreans in their diaspora to Hawai'i came to terms with their ethnic and local selves, and also how the sense of who and what they are changed over the years, both within and beyond the initial generation. Looking into their individual and collective identities in lyric poems, oral history, autobiography, and memoirs reveals how the earliest arrivals, their children, and their grandchildren have come to terms with their national, ethnic, and local selves, and how their sense of identity changes over the course of time, both within and beyond the initial generation. In the lyric poems found in Korean-language periodicals of the native-born generation, we can trace the significance of the motherland and Hawai'i for these writers' sense of identity. The oral histories of first-generation women, most of whom arrived as picture brides, also represent another "us" often vulnerable Koreans who define themselves in relation to both the present culture and to Korean men. The self developed by the second-, third-, and in-between-generation Koreans diversifies because their identity is not defined exclusively by their ancestral land, extending to Hawai'i and to America. This study focuses on three main areas of emphasis: Hawai'i; Korean language and culture; and life writing. By tracing how identity changes with each generation, this study reveals how identity formation for Hawai'i diasporic Koreans has evolved.

Описание:
Colonial Rule and Social Change in Korea 1910-1945 highlights the complex interaction between indigenous activity and colonial governance, emphasizing how Japanese rule adapted to Korean and missionary initiatives, as well as how Koreans found space within the colonial system to show agency. Topics covered range from economic development and national identity to education and family; from peasant uprisings and thought conversion to a comparison of missionary and colonial leprosariums. These various new assessments of Japan's colonial legacy may open up new and illuminating approaches to historical memory that will resonate not just in Korean studies, but in colonial and postcolonial studies in general, and will have implications for the future of regional politics in East Asia.

Описание: The several timelines and short discussions in each page in this book make it easy for one to glance over and detect the cause-and-effects between successive events in recent China, that is: in the turbulent years from Opium War to Deng Xiao-Ping. An observation is: China has been deteriorating by itself for 40 years before the Opium war with Britain in 1839; then it took another 137 years including two internal revolutions, several more wars against external aggressors (especially the newly industrialized Japan), plus a devastating cultural revolution - before China could regain its footing and rejoined the world as equals. The politics in foreign countries relating to events in China are pointed out.
