From 1775 to 1925, artists in Europe were especially attuned to the gaps between appearance and reality, participating in and often critiquing the making of the self and the image. Fashion in European Art explores the significance of historical dress over this period of upheaval, as well as the lived experience of dress and its representation. The once-famous trading center of Gorée, Sénégal, today lies in the busy harbor of the modern city of Dakar. The chapters of this volume focus on intercultural diplomacy in different regions of the world wherein diplomatic actors of various kinds might have been confronted by a whole universe of unfamiliar artifacts and artifact-related practices. Most of them concentrate on gift giving as a diplomatic practice that offers multiple insights in the complex dynamics of diplomatic relations between representatives of culturally highly diverse political entities.
