Описание: After a successful career as an economist, attorney, real estate investor, and high school teacher, Stanton Braverman moves to Charlottesville as a part of his retirement plan. Up until then, everything went his way. But in Charlottesville, things went wrong. It did not make sense. Why did the city not care about the redevelopment of the Belmont neighborhood? While it was on the wrong side of the railroad tracks that ran through the town and home to many of the urban poor, it had a lot going for itself at a time when most cities were developing neglected neighborhoods. But Charlottesville was not interested in this development and was active in trying to curb any turnaround. For the author, this was crazy. Braverman fought with the city council about their neglect of the community. At the same time, the urban renewal movement caught on in Belmont-houses were remodeled and real estate values increased at startling rates. The area became charming, and tourists wanted to be there. And yet the council did not care. They were being obstructionists. They continuously misled the community about condemned bridges that resulted in a fight over the rezoning of a residential area and a court fight over a fresh water dam worth thirty-one million dollars that was not needed. In the story, Braverman tries to figure out why his house and his neighborhood are ground zero for such a battle with the council. He shows how the councils inability to connect with the community led to the violent riots over the removal of the statute of Robert E. Lee. Moreover, he concludes that when the council fully understands what was happening, then the war between the council and the neighborhood will end peacefully.

Описание:

A rich and revelatory memoir of a young woman reclaiming her courage in the stark landscapes of the north.

By the time Blair Braverman was eighteen, she had left her home in California, moved to arctic Norway to learn to drive sled dogs, and found work as a tour guide on a glacier in Alaska. Determined to carve out a life as a "tough girl"--a young woman who confronts danger without apology--she slowly developed the strength and resilience the landscape demanded of her.

By turns funny and sobering, bold and tender, Welcome to the Goddamn Ice Cube brilliantly recounts Braverman's adventures in Norway and Alaska. Settling into her new surroundings, Braverman was often terrified that she would lose control of her dog team and crash her sled, or be attacked by a polar bear, or get lost on the tundra. Above all, she worried that, unlike the other, gutsier people alongside her, she wasn't cut out for life on the frontier. But no matter how out of place she felt, one thing was clear: she was hooked on the North. On the brink of adulthood, Braverman was determined to prove that her fears did not define her--and so she resolved to embrace the wilderness and make it her own.

Assured, honest, and lyrical, Welcome to the Goddamn Ice Cube paints a powerful portrait of self-reliance in the face of extraordinary circumstance. Braverman endures physical exhaustion, survives being buried alive in an ice cave, and drives her dogs through a whiteout blizzard to escape crooked police. Through it all, she grapples with love and violence--navigating a grievous relationship with a fellow musher, and adapting to the expectations of her Norwegian neighbors--as she negotiates the complex demands of being a young woman in a man's land.

Weaving fast-paced adventure writing and ethnographic journalism with elegantly wrought reflections on identity, Welcome to the Goddamn Ice Cube captures the triumphs and the perils of Braverman's journey to self-discovery and independence in a landscape that is as beautiful as it is unforgiving.

Описание: "The Expanding Spaces of Law" presents readers with the cutting edge scholarship on legal geography and pushes the current boundaries of the field, investigating new questions and reinvigorating previous modes of inquiry.
Legal geography has contributed a great deal to understanding the many relationships between space and law. Earlier work has explored space that is static, such as the law's interaction with concepts of the home, public space, prison, restrooms, camps, territories, and nation states. But the past few years have seen an emphasis on analyzing the dynamic workings of space, and the understanding of space in various new ways. "The Expanding Spaces of Law" asks readers to consider what legal geography would look like if were we to give more prominence to conceptions of space as process, space as event, or space as situation or relationship. Questions of space and time are often implicit in the work of legal geographers, and this book seeks to bring these questions to the fore. Likewise, there are aspects of the connections between space, power and law that are investigated in tandem with motion, mobility, and immobilization, the effects of novel spatio-temporal technologies, and the dynamics of relational space.
"The Expanding Spaces of Law" brings together some of the most prominent names in the field, and includes new voices in the field from around the world to introduce provocative and exciting research in legal geography.

Описание:

Wild Life documents a nuanced understanding of the wild versus captive divide in species conservation. It also documents the emerging understanding that all forms of wild nature—both in situ (on-site) and ex situ (in captivity)—may need to be managed in perpetuity. Providing a unique window into the high-stakes world of nature conservation, Irus Braverman describes the heroic efforts by conservationists to save wild life. Yet in the shadows of such dedication and persistence in saving the life of species, Wild Life also finds sacrifice and death. Such life and death stories outline the modern struggle to define what conservation should look like at a time when the long-established definitions of nature have collapsed.

Wild Life begins with the plight of a tiny endangered snail, and ends with the rehabilitation of an entire island. Interwoven between its pages are stories about golden lion tamarins in Brazil, black-footed ferrets in the American Plains, Sumatran rhinos in Indonesia, Tasmanian devils in Australia, and many more creatures both human and nonhuman. Braverman draws on interviews with more than one hundred and twenty conservation biologists, zoologists, zoo professionals, government officials, and wildlife managers to explore the various perspectives on in situ and ex situ conservation and the blurring of the lines between them.
