Описание: Shortlisted for the HWA Sharpe Books Non-Fiction Crown AwardA work of investigative history that will completely change the way in which we see the Romanov story. Finally, here is the truth about the secret plans to rescue Russia's last imperial family. On 17 July 1918, the whole of the Russian Imperial Family was murdered.
There were no miraculous escapes. The former Tsar Nicholas, his wife Alexandra, and their children - Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia and Alexey - were all tragically gunned down in a blaze of bullets. Historian Helen Rappaport sets out to uncover why the Romanovs' European royal relatives and the Allied governments failed to save them.
It was not, ever, a simple case of one British King's loss of nerve. In this race against time, many other nations and individuals were facing political and personal challenges of the highest order. In this incredible detective story, Rappaport draws on an unprecedented range of unseen sources, tracking down missing documents, destroyed papers and covert plots to liberate the family by land, sea and even sky.
Through countless twists and turns, this revelatory work unpicks many false claims and conspiracies, revealing the fiercest loyalty, bitter rivalries and devastating betrayals as the Romanovs, imprisoned, awaited their fate. A remarkable new work of history from Helen Rappaport, author of Ekaterinburg: The Last Days of the Romanovs.

Описание: John F. Kennedy was a popular, charismatic president, beloved by many. But he didn't always believe he had the strength or courage for that office. As a child he was sickly, and overshadowed by his strong, capable, athletic older brother Joe. After Joe Jr.'s death, John had to work hard to live up to his own expectations and to those of his father. He overcame pain and self-doubt to see the country through one of the most difficult crises in its history. Doreen Rappaport once again combines real-life quotes with her own lyrical prose to create a moving portrait of a beloved figure. Matt Tavares's stunning artwork vividly depicts this unique time in history. Описание: This is the fifth book documenting the Louis I. Kahn Visiting Assistant Professorship featuring the work of young architect-practitioners teaching in the advanced studios at Yale. The studios each explore new typologies and include the themes, "Once Upon A House," taught by Hernan Diaz Alonzo of the L.A. based architectural practice Xefirotarch, which examined the relationship of types versus species, where type is viewed as "categories of standardization, then species are malleable entities in constant metamorphosis." The brief called for a house to occupy a site in three acts by employing a cellular spatial logic. In subverting the typology of the house, the studio presents radical possibilities of inhabitation. In the "Expanded Mosque," taught by Makram El Kadi and Ziad Jamaleddine of the New York and Beirut-based architectural practice L.E.F.T. the students critiqued architecturally both an imported Modernism that is dissociated from contextual consideration and a reconstruction of the present in the image of an idealized past. The program of the mosque does not only serve a purely liturgical function, but is also an important community gathering place. The studio examined how the physical space of the mosque and social space of Islam can have a dialogue with other programs, religious or secular. The studio questioned the stagnating typology of the mosque in an attempt to project new possibilities for the future for a site of a World's Fair designed by Oscar Niemeyer in Tripoli. In the advanced studio, "Re-Storing Public Possessions," Geoff Shearcroft, Vincent Lacovara, Tom Coward, and Daisy Froud of the London-based architectural practice AOC investigated the increasing emphasis on material artifacts and demand for 'hard' storage in this digital world. The studio examined the established public repositories of London--the V&A Museum, the Tate Gallery, the British Museum, the British Library, and the Royal Armouries--and how they might evolve in response to the changing demands of the contemporary public to create a participative and productive architecture. The book features interviews with the professors. "
Описание: Brasilia was born with the car central to its conception, and the result is a City of the Future that is decidedly anti-urban. Twenty kilometers from the north edge of Brasilia is Sobradinho, also planned by Costa, but as a settlement rather than a city. Between Brasilia and Sobradinho lies a 16 million square-meter estate known as "Fazenda Paranoazinho." The book examines the premise of collective city-making on this large empty site between Brasilia and its unplanned satellite suburbs in a studio led by Brazilian developers Rafael and Ricardo Birmann and Sunil Bald assistant professor at Yale School of Architecture. It includes essays and interviews of the Birmanns, Bald and David Sim of Gehl Architects as well as a photo essay by Stefan Ruiz.
