Описание: Upon learning that you will become a grandmother, it seems like a simple thing to rejoice at the news. But for some people sunny optimism is an indulgence. Some of us prefer not to "count our chickens before they hatch" (pun intended) or to revel in the excitement of good things to come, before they arrive. This is the story of how Yona, a daughter of Holocaust survivors, found a way to manage her anxiety and elation upon learning that her first grandchild was on the way. Even after her daughters first trimester, Yona could still not speak of the baby as a real person. When her daughter found websites that compared fetal development to fruits or vegetables, Yona realized there might be a way to embrace her joy and find safe passage to grandmotherhood. In a series of whimsical, produce-focused emails - like using a butternut squash at 26 weeks - Yona updated the family on the babys development. These posts kept family, scattered across the country, connected and able to share the exciting journey. This story will not only inspire expectant parents and grandparents to share their excitement, but also help each of us find the courage to embrace joy across all aspects of our lives.

Описание: Dr. Tom Brady began his career at Owens-Illinois, Inc. in 1972, just as the carbonated soft drink companies began asking their suppliers to create and offer family-size carbonated beverage containers, which required an industry-wide conversion from glass and aluminum to plastic. As a fledging Senior Scientist, Tom, along with his O-I colleagues and along with other industry plastic package suppliers, accepted the challenge and, over a short 10-year period, created an entirely new industry to supply sustainable PET packaging to the beverage, food, and personal care product industries. During that same 10-year dynamic technology and business development era at O-I and as O-I decided to refocus on its fundamental glass container business, many of O-I s talented technology and business professionals who had helped diversify O-Is business portfolio, left O-I to either start or operate other major businesses. "The Impact of Owens-Illinois on the World" is Toms effort to capture the stories of 29 of those former O-I employees who, without competing with O-I, employed their talents and O-I backgrounds, to create or nurture many dynamic and successful business enterprises. Many of Toms colleagues who are mentioned in this book are no longer with us so there was little background information to draw upon and there are undoubtedly additional former O-I employees who have started companies but are not included in this history. However, it is Toms wish that this compilation will begin to recognize the significant contributions that former O-I employees have made to society, in addition to what they contributed during their careers at O-I.

Описание:
As the ground war in Vietnam escalated in the late 1960s, the US government leveraged the so-called doctor draft to secure adequate numbers of medical personnel in the armed forces. Among newly minted physicians’ few alternatives to military service was the Clinical Associate Training Program at the National Institutes of Health. Though only a small percentage of applicants were accepted, the elite program launched an unprecedented number of remarkable scientific careers that would revolutionize medicine at the end of the twentieth century.
Medal Winners recounts this overlooked chapter and unforeseen byproduct of the Vietnam War through the lives of four former NIH clinical associates who would go on to become Nobel laureates. Raymond S. Greenberg traces their stories from their pre-NIH years and apprenticeships through their subsequent Nobel Prize–winning work, which transformed treatment of heart disease, cancer, and other diseases. Greenberg shows how the Vietnam draft unintentionally ushered in a golden era of research by bringing talented young physicians under the tutelage of leading scientists and offers a lesson in what it may take to replicate such a towering center of scientific innovation as the NIH in the 1960s and 1970s.
Esther Clayson Pohl Lovejoy, whose long life stretched from 1869 to 1967, challenged convention from the time she was a young girl. Her professional life began as one of Oregon's earliest women physicians, and her commitment to public health and medical relief took her into the international arena, where she was chair of the American Women's Hospitals after World War I and the first president of the Medical Women's International Association. Most disease, suffering, and death, she believed, were the result of wars and social and economic inequities, and she was determined to combat those conditions through organized action.
Lovejoy's early life and career in the Pacific Northwest gave her key experiences and strategies to use for what she termed "constructive resistance," the ability to take effective action against unjust power. She took a political and pragmatic approach to what she called "woman's big job"-achieving a full female citizenship-and emphasized the importance of votes for women. In this engaging biography, Kimberly Jensen tells the story of this important western woman, exploring her approach to politics, health, and society and her civic, economic, and medical activism.

Описание: Between 1941 and 1945 as many as 70,000 inmates died at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in northwestern Germany. The exact number will never be known. A large number of these deaths were caused by malnutrition and disease, mainly typhus, shortly before and after liberation. It was at this time, in April of 1945, that Michael Hargrave answered a notice at the Westminster Hospital Medical School for 'volunteers'. On the day of his departure the 21-year-old learned that he was being sent to Bergen-Belsen, liberated only two weeks before. This firsthand account, a diary written for his mother, details Michael's month-long experience at the camp. He compassionately relates the horrendous living conditions suffered by the prisoners, describing the sickness and disease he encountered and his desperate, often fruitless, struggle to save as many lives as possible. Amidst immeasurable horrors, his descriptions of the banalities of everyday life and diagrams of the camp's layout take on a new poignancy, while anatomic line drawings detail the medical conditions and his efforts to treat them. Original newspaper cuttings and photographs of the camp, many previously unpublished, add a further layer of texture to the endeavors of an inexperienced medical student faced with extreme human suffering.

Описание: Fran?ois Delaporte’s Chagas Disease chronicles Brazilian medicine’s encounter with a disease, an insect, and a history of discovery. Between 1909 and 1911, Carlos Chagas described an infection (pathogenic trypanosome), its intermediate host, and the illness that he believed it caused, parasitic thyroiditis. Chagas’s work did not lack significance: the disease that came to share his name would be one of Latin America’s most serious endemic diseases. However, the clinical identification of the disease through “Roma?a’s sign” (a palpebral edema or swelling of the eyelid) some decades later marked a transformation in the general medical knowledge of the disease and its basis altogether. Not only was the disease entity that Chagas had described shown to be a nosological illusion, but twenty-five years of scientific controversy turned out to have been based on a misunderstanding. The continued use of the term “Chagas’s Disease” even after Cecilio Roma?a’s discovery thus refers to a fundamental ambiguity. Delaporte dispels this ambiguity by re-examining the various discoveries, dead ends, controversies, and major epistemological transformations that marked the history of the disease––a history that begins with the creation of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute in Rio de Janeiro and ends in the forests of Santa Fe in northern Argentina. Delaporte’s study shows how an epistemological focus can add depth to the history of medicine and complexity to accounts of scientific discovery.
