A comprehensive monograph on Hiroshige, the last great master of the ukiyo-e style, with more than 400 reproductions
This substantial volume offers a broad panorama of the hugely popular oeuvre of Hiroshige (1797-1858), the great artist of the Japanese popular school of printmaking who transmuted everyday landscapes into intimate, lyrical scenes. The text examines his life and achievements, and elucidates the special qualities that made his prints so popular in 19th-century Japan and Europe. Alongside Hokusai, Hiroshige dominated the popular art of Japan in the first half of the 19th century, capturing the ordinary person's experience of the Japanese landscape as well varied moods of memorable places at different times. Ukiyo-e publishing was not a cultural institution subsidized by public funds, but rather a commercial business. During his lifetime, Hiroshige was well known and commercially successful--his total output was immense, some 5,400 prints in all--but Japanese society took little notice of him, and his reputation only began in earnest with his discovery in Europe. Hiroshige: The Master of Nature features an abundance of color plates, and at more than 300 pages is the most complete overview currently available.

Описание: 'A fascinating celebration of the impact that structural engineering has on all our lives...[an] eye-opening book' The Sunday Times In BUILT, structural engineer Roma Agrawal takes a unique look at how construction has evolved from the mud huts of our ancestors to skyscrapers of steel that reach hundreds of metres into the sky. She unearths how engineers have tunnelled through kilometres of solid mountains; how they've bridged across the widest and deepest of rivers, and tamed Nature's precious - and elusive - water resources. She tells vivid tales of the visionaries who created the groundbreaking materials in the Pantheon's record-holding concrete dome and the frame of the record-breaking Eiffel Tower.
Through the lens of an engineer, Roma examines tragedies like the collapse of the Quebec Bridge, highlighting the precarious task of ensuring people's safety they hold at every step. With colourful stories of her life-long fascination with buildings - and her own hand-drawn illustrations - Roma reveals the extraordinary secret lives of structures.

Love and Romance in Early Drama Guest Editors: Charlotte Steenbrugge and Alexandra F. Johnston Chief Editor: Mario B. Longtin
Volume 54 of ROMARD, 'Love and Romance in Early Drama', is a special volume, guest-edited by Alexandra F. Johnston and Charlotte Steenbrugge. It features eight contributions by established scholars and early career researchers, looking at the various complex aspects of the representation of human love and the use of the romance genre, from Hrotsvit of Gandersheim to Mucedorus and from Le Poulier six personnages (The Chicken Coop for Six Characters) to The Merchant of Venice. The essays in this volume all demonstrate the significance of romance, both as a genre and a theme, for medieval and early modern drama and will hopefully stimulate greater interest in this multifaceted area of research. We have also included an edition and verse translation of an early modern French farce in the hope that this will encourage scholars, students, and theatre practitioners to stage these fascinating and eminently performable plays that use 'love' in a different, but compelling, way.
