Описание: A lavish volume revealing the artists who inspired Gustav Klimt, the great master of Viennese Modernism. Throughout his career, Gustav Klimt was attentive to the work of his contemporaries, including Lawrence Alma-Tadema, George Minne, Auguste Rodin, Jan Toorop, Ferdinand Hodler, Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, Fernand Khnopff, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Henri Matisse, and many others, and he continually adapted elements from a variety of styles. This stunning volume presents in large-format illustrations the works of Klimt alongside those of artists who were close to him, revealing significant and often surprising parallels. With these juxtapositions, we see Klimt contrasted with artists who worked in a variety of styles and techniques, all very different from Klimt's. These pages offer new insight into not just the work of Klimt and his contemporaries, but also the ways that artists share innovations in style and subject, and how the influence of an artistic milieu reveals itself in unexpected ways. The result is a lavishly illustrated volume about Modernism featuring many outstanding and iconic artworks from the beloved masters of the time.

Описание: This book presents a collection of special studies focussing on some of the many typologically and genetically interrelated lamellophones and the respective web of musical idioms and "dialects" whose historically dynamic distribution covers the vast south-central African area of what are now the Shona-speaking parts of Zimbabwe and adjacent areas in Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, and South Africa. Besides deepening specific aspects of and exploring amazing new developments branching out from the already well-documented Zezuru mbira dzavadzimu and the Kwanongoma Colleges, now widespread, schools version of the karimba, these studies also highlight some of the previously underrepresented members of the south-central African lamellophone family such as the Tonga kankobela, the Lala kankobele, the Korekore and Sena-Nyungwe matepe, and the particularly variable and idiosyncratic Ndau mbira dza-VaNdau. Special emphasis is laid on in-depth analyses of the intricately systemic nexus between their organology, their playing techniques and the cognitive dimension, aesthetics, function and symbolism of their respective musical repertoires, as well as on the "biology" of those repertoires as embodied knowledge transmitted aurally/visually within dynamic networks of players. Significant recent innovations which are analyzed here include the extension, hybridization and triple-combination of different tuning plans into a single large-ambitus solo instrument, the emergence of, again large-ambitus, "mbira orchestras" created by means of a staggered extension and modally shifted reorganization of the traditional ensemble structure and musical material (however, at the cost of blurring the identity of individual pieces and undermining their religious function), as well as perhaps the utmost possible extension of improvisational spaces within the otherwise unchallenged grammatical framework of an individual mbira piece. The present volume pools contributions of fourteen African, American and European scholars and musicians from Zimbabwe, South Africa, the United States, the Netherlands, Austria and Germany. An extensive collection of audio, video and graphic companion material is provided online. The editor is a lecturer at the Department of Musicology and the curator of the Collection of Musical Instruments at the University of Gottingen, Germany.ingen, Germany.
Contemporary music, like other arts, is dealing with the rise of curators« laying claim to everything from festivals to playlists - but what are they and what do they do anyway? Drawing from backgrounds ranging from curatorial studies to festival studies and musicology, Brandon Farnsworth lays out a theory for understanding curatorial practices in contemporary music, and how they could be a solution to the field's diminishing social relevance. The volume focuses on two case studies, the Munich Biennale for New Music Theatre, and the Maerzmusik Festival at the Berliner Festspiele, putting them in a transdisciplinary history of curatorial practice, and showing what music curatorial practice can be.
Описание: In modernity, music has received an almost religious status while liturgical music has been increasingly regarded as art. This study of the unique Dutch festival Musica Sacra Maastricht demonstrates how this dual development leads to new frameworks for meaning-making. These frameworks provide traditional religions relevance in secularized contexts and emphasize the ritual qualities of music. Many visitors value the festival’s focus on the sacred, which it maintains in a program of both religious and non-religious music, from Gregorian chant to art music. The framework of sacrality transgresses the strongly-embedded boundary between the religious and the secular, displaying the multiplicity of contemporary sense-making practices. The ethnographic data of this study is situated in a discussion of the sacred’s theoretical potential. It draws attention to the values people attribute to music, whether or not it is religious. This study argues for a broad approach to the attribution of non-negotiable value. Such attribution results from experiences that connect everyday life with the non-ordinary reality of musical performance, evoking memories, feelings of recognition and homecoming, or the opposite feelings of discovery of the unknown.
Описание: John Jenkins (1592-1678) was both the most prolific and the most esteemed of English composers in the fifty years or so between the death of William Byrd and the rise of Henry Purcell. After his apprenticeship Jenkins became renowned as a skilled performer on lute and viol, once playing to Charles I 'as one that performed somewhat extraordinary'. Throughout his long life he was employed as a resident musician in East Anglia in households of the nobility, where, as well as playing, teaching and directing the music-making, his duties would include the composing and copying of music. At the restoration of Charles II Jenkins became a court musician, although, in view of his advanced age, he spent little time there. He died on 27 October 1678 at Kimberley, Norfolk, where he is buried. As a composer, Jenkins' preferred medium was instrumental music, and he wrote little else. He came to maturity in the 1620s, when the consort fantasia for viols was in its prime. In later years he turned to the newer music then in vogue, such as the fantasia-suite and suites of dances, contributing significantly to their development. This book is the second in a two-volume study of Jenkins and his music. Volume I contains a full biographical introduction before concerning itself exclusively with the superb consorts for viols which dominate the early part of the composer's career. This second volume surveys the rest of his output, setting each group of pieces in context, beginning with his innovative series of fantasia-suites. Although often unpretentious and geared to amateur performance, his 'horsloads' of airs maintain a lively and varied character. More than fifty works for bass viol(s) are among the best of their kind, as are the pieces featuring the lyra viol in both solo and consort works. The book ends by examining Jenkins' vocal music. Whatever medium he chose, Jenkins was able to add important pieces to the repertory. An growing list of recordings endorses Christopher Simpson's view that he was 'the ever Famous and most Excellent Composer, in all sorts of Modern Musick'. Andrew Ashbee is internationally known as an expert on seventeenth-century English instrumental music, particularly that of John Jenkins. He is the author of numerous articles and reviews in leading music journals, and he has broadcast and lectured in England, America and Holland.
Описание: Los Angeles, called Tehrangeles because it is home to the largest concentration of Iranians outside of Iran, is the birthplace of a distinctive form of postrevolutionary pop music. Created by professional musicians and media producers fleeing Iran's revolutionary-era ban on “immoral” popular music, Tehrangeles pop has been a part of daily life for Iranians at home and abroad for decades. In Tehrangeles Dreaming Farzaneh Hemmasi draws on ethnographic fieldwork in Los Angeles and musical and textual analysis to examine how the songs, music videos, and television made in Tehrangeles express modes of Iranianness not possible in Iran. Exploring Tehrangeles pop producers' complex commercial and political positioning and the histories, sensations, and fantasies their music makes available to global Iranian audiences, Hemmasi shows how unquestionably Iranian forms of Tehrangeles popular culture exemplify the manner in which culture, media, and diaspora combine to respond to the Iranian state and its political transformations. The transnational circulation of Tehrangeles culture, she contends, transgresses Iran's geographical, legal, and moral boundaries while allowing all Iranians the ability to imagine new forms of identity and belonging.

Once seen as a collection of artifacts and ritual objects, African art now commands respect from museums and collectors. Bennetta Jules-Rosette and J.R. Osborn explore the reframing of African art through case studies of museums and galleries in the United States, Europe, and Africa.
The authors take a three-pronged approach. Part One ranges from curiosity cabinets to virtual websites to offer a history of ethnographic and art museums and look at their organization and methods of reaching out to the public. In the second part, the authors examine museums as ecosystems and communities within communities, and they use semiotic methods to analyze images, signs, and symbols drawn from the experiences of curators and artists. The third part introduces innovative strategies for displaying, disseminating, and reclaiming African art. The authors also propose how to reinterpret the art inside and outside the museum and show ways of remixing the results.
Drawing on extensive conversations with curators, collectors, and artists, African Art Reframed is an essential guide to building new exchanges and connections in the dynamic worlds of African and global art.
