Описание: This original, pathbreaking study of North Korea s political history and culture sheds invaluable light on a country long cloaked in impenetrable mystery for the West. Leading scholars Byung-Ho Chung and Heonik Kwon begin by tracing Kim Il Sung s rise to power during the Cold War. They show how Kim sponsored the production of revolutionary art to unleash a public political culture that would consolidate his charismatic authority. The result was a legacy of performative politics and symbolic power that sustains North Korean leaders sovereignty to this day. In defiance of the instability to which so many revolutionary states eventually succumb, the durability of charismatic politics in North Korea define its exceptional place in modern history.Chung and Kwon make an innovative contribution to comparative socialism and postsocialism as well as to the anthropology of the state. Their unique work is essential for all readers interested in understanding North Korea and East Asia writ large, the role of art in society, and the possibilities of political culture.
This autobiography combines the personal story of Ahn Byung-Mu, one of the foremost Asian theologians, with the history of the Korean nation in the light of the dramatic social, political and cultural upheavals of the 1970s. It records the history of minjung (the people's) theology, one of the vigorous theologies to emerge in Asia, Ahu's involvement in it, and his interpretations of major Christian doctrines such as God, Sin, Jesus, and Holy Spirit from the minjung perspective. The volume also contains an introductory essay which situates Ahn's work in its context and discusses the place and purpose of minjung hermeneutics in a vastly different Korea.

Описание:
Transparency is the order of the day. It is a term, a slogan, that dominates public discourse about corruption and freedom of information. Considered crucial to democracy, it touches our political and economic lives as well as our private lives. Anyone can obtain information about anything. Everything—and everyone—has become transparent: unveiled or exposed by the apparatuses that exert a kind of collective control over the post-capitalist world.
Yet, transparency has a dark side that, ironically, has everything to do with a lack of mystery, shadow, and nuance. Behind the apparent accessibility of knowledge lies the disappearance of privacy, homogenization, and the collapse of trust. The anxiety to accumulate ever more information does not necessarily produce more knowledge or faith. Technology creates the illusion of total containment and the constant monitoring of information, but what we lack is adequate interpretation of the information. In this manifesto, Byung-Chul Han denounces transparency as a false ideal, the strongest and most pernicious of our contemporary mythologies.
This study of nineteenth-century Vietnam focuses on interactions between the Vietnamese king, Minh Mang, and the heterogeneous southern region of the country, which he sought to bring more firmly under state control through a series of polices intended to "Vietnamize" the populace and unite north and south.
