The engaging and heart-centered writing makes the concepts, examples, and practical tools more accessible, giving the reader a better grasp of the challenges in pursuing educational equity and what can make a significant difference. Dr. Carmen Ayala, Dr. John Harper, and Bea Young become real-life heroes whose commitment to students will make you want to keep reading to see the impact of their work. This book also includes a chapter on culturally responsive curriculum, written by Susan O'Halloran, a nationally recognized equity consultant.

This book investigates how various constructions of identity can influence educational achievement for African American students, both within and outside school.
Unique in its attention to the challenges that social and educational stratification pose, as well as to the opportunities that extracurricular activities can offer for African American students' access to learning, this book brings a deeper understanding of the local and fluid aspects of academic, racial, and ethnic identities. Exploring agency, personal sense-making, and social processes, this book contributes a strong new voice to the growing conversation on the relationship between identity and achievement for African American youth.

Описание: It is becoming increasingly clear that non-cognitive psychological processes are important for students’ school achievement, even to the point where their influence may be stronger than that exerted by the parents, teachers, or the school atmosphere itself. Non-cognitive psychological variables refer to varieties of self-beliefs and goal orientations – such as anxiety, confidence, self-efficacy, and self-concept – which are often seen as dispositional and motivational in nature. It is particularly important to highlight the role that confidence and self-efficacy play in school achievement, as these two self-beliefs are related to metacognitive processing – the awareness of what you know and what you do not know. Self-concept, meanwhile, tends to exert its influence on an individual’s choice of tertiary level courses. This book suggests that by focusing on students’ self-beliefs, the education system may be in a position to improve cognitive performance, since individual students’ self-beliefs may be more malleable than the cognitive processes involved in acquiring academic knowledge. Focusing on these non-cognitive psychological processes is also likely to be more effective in improving performance than system-wide interventions involving changes in policy for both public and private sector educators.?This book will be useful to educational researchers, school leaders, administrators, counsellors, and teachers, in guiding students’ attitudes towards learning and school performance. It will also provide students in psychology and education with broad and nuanced insights into the drivers of school achievement. This book was originally published as a special issue of Educational Psychology.

Описание: This book explores a range of psychosocial resources, and discusses them in relation to lived experiences and outcomes in educational and socioeconomic domains. It offers close insights into the complex relationship between psychosocial resources, such as familial influence, religiosity, aspirations, and socioeconomic progression in Britain. This is achieved by exploring the lived experiences of a sample group of Caribbeans, one of Britain's most internally diverse but discernibly disadvantaged social groups. Detailed accounts of the participants’ experiences are offered to provide insights to a wide range of stakeholders in education. Teachers, behaviour specialists, parents, policy advocates, psychologists, social researchers, social justice warriors and lay people will all benefit from this empirically informed perspective on psychosocial resources and their implications for educational attainment and socioeconomic progress. The book implores the reader to appreciate more fully how psychosocial resources play out in outcomes of achievement and progression, and how such outcomes may be improved among members of some disadvantaged social groups. It will be an invaluable resource for students, researchers, and educators in the fields of Education, Sociology, and Psychology.

Описание: This book examines immigrant student achievement and education policy across a range of Western nations. It is divided into 3 sections: Part 1 introduces the topic of immigrant student achievement and the performance disadvantage that is consistently reported across a range of international jurisdictions. Part 2 then presents national profiles from scholars in ten countries (England, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Finland, Netherlands, Republic of Ireland, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand). These educational jurisdictions were selected because they represent a range of Western nations engaged in large-scale reform efforts geared towards enhancing their immigrant students’ achievement. Each of the national profiles provides a brief overview of the evolution of the cultural composition of their respective school-aged student population; explains the trajectory of achievement results in non-immigrant and immigrant student groups in relation to both national and international large-scale assessment measures; and discusses the effectiveness of policy responses that have been adopted to close the achievement gap between non-immigrant and immigrant student populations. It also examines the relationships between education policies and immigrant student achievement and discusses how education policies have evolved across various cultural contexts. In conclusion, Part 3 analyzes cross-cultural approaches designed to address the performance disadvantage of immigrant students and proposes future areas of inquiry stemming from the national profiles.  The book offers insights into a diverse cross-section of nations and policy approaches to addressing the performance disadvantage.
