Wittenberg, the authors of more than forty Civil War books, have once again teamed up to present a history of the opening moves of the Gettysburg Campaign in the two-volume study "If We Are Striking for Pennsylvania": The Army of Northern Virginia's and Army of the Potomac's March to Gettysburg. This compelling study is one of the first to integrate the military, media, political, social, economic, and civilian perspectives with rank-and-file accounts from the soldiers of both armies as they inexorably march toward their destiny at Gettysburg. This first installment covers June 3-22, 1863, while the second, spanning June 22-30, completes the march and carries the armies to the eve of the fighting.
Gen. Robert E. Lee began moving his victorious Army of Northern Virginia from the Old Dominion into Pennsylvania on June 3, 1863.
Lee believed his army needed to win a major victory on Northern soil if the South was to have a chance to win the war. Transferring the fighting out of war-torn Virginia would allow the state time to heal while he supplied his army from untapped farms and stores in Maryland and the Keystone State. Lee had also convinced Pres.
Jefferson Davis that his offensive would interfere with the Union effort to take Vicksburg in Mississippi. The bold movement would trigger extensive cavalry fighting and a major battle at Winchester before culminating in the bloody three-day battle at Gettysburg. As the Virginia army moved north, the Army of the Potomac responded by protecting the vital roads to Washington, D.C., in case Lee turned to threaten the capital.
Opposing presidents Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis, meanwhile, kept a close watch on the latest and often conflicting military intelligence gathered in the field. Throughout northern Virginia, central Maryland, and south-central Pennsylvania, meanwhile, civilians and soldiers alike struggled with the reality of a mobile campaign and the massive logistical needs of the armies. Thousands left written accounts of the passage of the long martial columns.
Mingus and Wittenberg mined hundreds of primary accounts, newspapers, and other sources to produce this powerful and gripping account. As readers will quickly learn, much of it is glossed over in other studies of the campaign, a campaign which cannot be fully understood without a firm appreciation of what the armies did on their way to the small crossroads town in Pennsylvania.

Описание: Rosie was with me, looking out of a window, an imaginary scene of a battle during the Civil War in our minds. We were trying to understand the feelings of thousands who gave their lives for enduring desires, a right to live, a right to exhibit pride and honor, and a right to be equal. Attempting to realize the senseless meaning of the four-year war, as brutal and pointless one may surmise, we feel as though there is an awareness at these battlefields, a feeling of spiritual glow of the historical happenings. The devotion of each and every soldier regardless of rank or capability to be in the fight on foot and face-to-face-all this during the many nights of freezing temperatures, lack of food, medical assistance, or comfort of one's family. The many times that I visited Gettysburg and other battlefields, I feel an urge, such a passion, to learn more.
Описание: Once again, the soldiers, officers, and commanders tell the story in this third volume of Kevin Campbell's comprehensive work on the Gettysburg Campaign, Journey to Armageddon. The hardships, comradery, short rations, and the dance with the enemy's bullets and shells are all here. Blistering sun, drenching rains, chocking dust, sticky mud, played out horses and men, and the high-level, often inharmoniousness communications between army commanders and their governments are presented in these pages. Fortunately, not all is despair and doom. Included are the sometimes-humorous interactions with the civilians met along their journey and the acrimony that frequently filled encounters between hungry soldiers and the administrators of the villages and towns they passed through. The tales told by these hardy men about the events of their existence are significant elements within the story of the Gettysburg Campaign, which author Kevin Campbell tells in a clear and concise prose. Most historians who write of the great crusade gloss over these events in favor of the more prominent proceedings in and around Gettysburg. These often-ignored events and much more are incorporated into his complete treatment of the Union and Confederate armies on their journey to Armageddon.

Описание: In June 2020, Dr. Paul Diamond is sent back in time along with three other team members to Washington City in 1863. Their mission is to meet and help Abraham Lincoln and the Union armies defeat the Confederate army led by Robert E. Lee by offering advanced weapons that would help defeat the Southern armies at Gettysburg and Vicksburg, thereby hastening their surrender. Their efforts are hampered by a spy and secret organization that will do whatever possible to sue for peace and force the North to leave the Union as it is, allowing slavery to remain the way it was before the Civil War began.
