Описание: Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was a German Expressionist pioneer, a prolific painter and printmaker, and cofounder of Die Brucke movement. Through vivid landscapes, stark nudes, and dynamic urban scenes, this introductory book explores his radical painting in pre-World War I Germany and his leading influence on 20th-century art.
We can often learn as much from political movements that failed as from those that achieved their goals. Nationalists Who Feared the Nation looks at one such frustrated movement: a group of community leaders and writers in Venice, Trieste, and Dalmatia during the 1830s, 40s, and 50s who proposed the creation of a multinational zone surrounding the Adriatic Sea. At the time, the lands of the Adriatic formed a maritime community whose people spoke different languages and practiced different faiths but identified themselves as belonging to a single region of the Hapsburg Empire. While these activists hoped that nationhood could be used to strengthen cultural bonds, they also feared nationalism's homogenizing effects and its potential for violence. This book demonstrates that not all nationalisms attempted to create homogeneous, single-language, -religion, or -ethnicity nations. Moreover, in treating the Adriatic lands as one unit, this book serves as a correction to "national" histories that impose our modern view of nationhood on what was a multinational region.
Описание: Introducing feisty Asian-American private investigator Maya Mallick in the first of an intriguing new mystery series. During a morning stroll in Seattle's Green Lake district, Maya Mallick is horrified to see two young women, shrouded in white, set themselves ablaze in front of the temporary residence of the visiting Chinese foreign minister. She's even more shocked to recognize one of them: Sylvie Burton, a brilliant Tibetan-American biomedical scientist, who is the adopted sister of Maya's best friend. An onlooker informs her that the two women are martyrs, protesting the Chinese occupation of Tibet. Yet Maya has a nagging suspicion that all is not as it seems. With so much to live for, why would Sylvie wish to end her life in this horrific way? As Maya gets closer to the shocking truth, she finds her own life on the line.

Описание: A major conference was heldin 2018 in Davos, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's elective home, to mark the 80thanniversary of the artist's death. The lavishly illustrated volume accompanying the event brings together international experts who present their approach to Kirchner's creative work, thereby providing a multi-faceted overview of an oeuvre that has lost none of its topicality to this day. The area of focus of the first international, interdisciplinary conference on Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, one of the most important artist personalities of the twentieth century, lay on fundamental questions of his artistry as well as a study of his approach to his work and the artistic process.
Kirchner's work is discussed against a background of art-historical, socio-cultural and historical contexts. His interest in and study of non-European cultures, literature, philosophy, art criticism and the role of the artist provide new and exciting points of contact for today's art-theoretical and art-critical observations.
Spanning the time period from 1045 BCE to 1500 CE, Inquiry-Based Lessons in World History (Vol. 1) focuses on creating global connections between people and places using primary sources in standards-based lessons. With sections on early humans, the ancient world, classical antiquity, and the world in transition, this book provides teachers with inquiry-based, ready-to-use lessons that can be adapted to any classroom and that encourage students to take part in the learning process by reading and thinking like historians. Each section contains four chapters that correspond to the scope and sequence of most world history textbooks. Each inquiry lesson begins with an essential question and connections to content and literacy standards, followed by primary source excerpts or links to those sources. Lessons include step-by-step directions, incorporate a variety of literacy strategies, and require students to make a hypothesis using evidence from the texts they have read.
