Описание:

"Works in Progress (2021)" is a smorgasbord of nine widely varying pieces: joyful, contemplative, humorous, serious (a public interest essay), personal essays, and dark stories, many of which are almost ready to publish independently, but will cost much more if purchased separately. The memory tax, family pride and ancestor snobbery placed in context (Letters to the Dead), our attitudes to beggars, stories about fatherhood, some tools that may come in handy when talking to writers (or else, or for writers dealing with the public), and many others.

Real life is a combination of light and dark moments, and though I am often known for my humor and satire, there are untold stories within me that demand to be told, that would kill me not to tell them. A writer who fails to tell his stories is untrue to himself. This is why "Works in Progress (2021)" is a book I call upon all my true friends to read. Please, please, please: you don't know who I am, what I am hiding, and what burdens I am carrying, until you read at least this one book of mine, in which I keep my promise to myself and to my readers: to tell my truth.

Why do I publish this book now? Because, feeling the fragility of life especially keenly at this moment in my life, I never know which book could be my last published book. And every moment is precious.

Описание: "Eaten by the Japanese" is the inspiring World War II memoir of an Indian soldier in the British Indian Army--the only such surviving account from among the thousands of Indians who were captured by the Japanese in World War II, shipped to New Britain and other islands in the Pacific, suffered horrific conditions, with many losing their lives. An automatic prisoner of war once the British general surrendered, Crasta makes a moral decision not to trust the Japanese or to desert to the Japanese-sponsored Indian National Army. He is taken to Rabaul in New Britain (Papua New Guinea) in a "torture ship," and miraculously survives 3 1/2 years of inhuman treatment by his Japanese captors and bombardment by Allied planes. Rescued by Australians, he returns home to India and writes this memoir in 1946, which also refers to incidents of cannibalism. He then waits another 51 years before his memoir, written in pencil, is read and published by his son, Richard Crasta, who by then is an author living in the United States. In the process of reading this book, the once-estranged son rediscovers his father, adding his own Notes and three essays to the book, which he publishes and presents to his 87-year-old father on the latter's 50th wedding anniversary."More than any book in recent memory, Eaten by the Japanese drives home the lasting effects of enforced captivity - not only on the bodies but also on the minds of the prisoners . . . it is a book about kindness, solidarity, and collective survival, about the bonds that matter: those between one single human being and another. Not a mere story of self but an epic of collective agony. "--Professor Barry Fruchter."A classic in military history, telling the story of men trapped in a world of torture, starvation, and death"-Roger Mansell, War historian, in Tameme Magazine"You see the horror of war, without a trace of artifice, through the eyes of one who was there, the writing a simple act of catharsis. A war memoir that ranks with the best."-Professor Mark Ledbetter, Nisei University"Striking and raw, an antidote to myth. Something to be treasured. It made me think of what had happened to my own father's memoirs, which were lost."--Professor Barry Fruchter.

Описание: The sixteen essays in this volume trace the development of Platonism in the history of Western thought, starting with the revival of the Platonic tradition in the early modern period that followed the rediscovery and translation of important Greek texts. Special attention is devoted to Marsilio Ficino’s translations and commentaries; to the relationship between Platonism and Christianity; to the influence of Platonic metaphysics on the mystical tradition – in particular on Jacob Bohme and Emanuel Swedenborg; to the impact of idealism on the hermeneutical criticism of traditional philosophical categories and to the ways in which the so-called ‘Critique of Modernity’ promoted a new reading of the Platonic dialogues. The emphasis throughout is on demonstrating the theoretical and historical continuity of Platonism over the centuries.

Contributors are: Laura Candiotto, Pierpaolo Ciccarelli, Anna Corrias, Francesca Maria Crasta, Eva del Soldato, Laura Follesa, Guido Giglioni, Nicholas Holland, Andrea Le Moli, Brunello Lotti, Cecilia Muratori, Arnold Oberhammer, Paula Oliveira e Silva, Valery Rees, Pasquale Terracciano, and Angelo Maria Vitale.
