Описание: Journey around the world through 199 flags This striking visual book explores the shapes, figures, and colors of flag design.

Whether a national flag features vertical stripes or horizontal ones, two colors or more, symbols drawn from nature or from history--each detail of its design is intentional and loaded with meaning.

Graphic designer Orith Kolodny demystifies the recurring colors and visual components of national flags. Through the study of flag design, this book shows that countries with vastly different climates and cultures often have more in common than one might expect.

This book is:
- Organized by design rather than geography
- Divided into categories such as stripes, diagonal lines, triangles, circles, crosses, and natural forms (like suns, moons, stars, and trees)
- A stylish introduction to the iconography of independence

199 Flags explores the meaning behind each flag in an entertaining and accessible way.

Through a captivating combination of design theory and world history, youll learn how to decode the symbols and interpret shapes of flags through a designers eye.

- A perfect gift for dads, designers, travelers, geography nerds, and history buffs
- Learn about our world in a unique way that prioritizes design and meaning over rote memorization.
- Great for fans of Logo Design Love: A Guide to Creating Iconic Brand Identities by David Airey, The Design of Everyday Things by Don Norman, Flags of the World by Sylvie Bednar, and Draplin Design Co. by Aaron James Draplin

Описание:

Based on the NPT three-part mini series, Do No Harm: The Opioid Epidemic follows author and director, Harry Wiland as he works to unearth the history and truth behind America's rampant opioid crisis, and investigates how this crisis ballooned into an epidemic fueled by Big Pharma's ploys, the medical community's obliviousness, and policymakers lack of oversight.

The Opioid Epidemic is the worst man-made drug epidemic in the history of our nation. More people die each year from an opioid drug overdose than in automobile accidents. The statistics are staggering. Do No Harm spotlights experts, journalists, and public health crusaders who are combating the special interests of Big Pharma and informing the world on how an aggressive pharmaceutical mass marketing campaign for the new drug OxyContin misled doctors and the public into our current crisis of death and addiction.

Wiland highlights the stories of those hit hardest by prescription opioid addiction and overdose death, and sheds light on how whole communities have been ravaged by the spread of addiction. Despite regional health experts, local government, law enforcement, journalists, and the DEA's efforts to combat the epidemic, people continue to die at an alarming rate from prescription drug overdoses.

The chapters of this book chronicle this opioid epidemic in all its complexity from many perspectives including the plight of the millions of Americans who suffer from opioid addiction. People, young and old on the rocky road to recovery, tell their harrowing stories, current victories, and on-going struggles with the disease.

Описание:

From the foreword..

Brad Kolodny provides an important history, inventory, and photo archive of the synagogues of Long Island. He has identified 219 active synagogues on Long Island (not counting Brooklyn and Queens), of which 166 are in Nassau County and 53 in Suffolk County. Additionally, there are 67 still-standing former synagogue buildings, 44 in Nassau and 23 in Suffolk. This volume offers a look at all these synagogues and in so doing traces the history of Long Island's Jewish religious life.

In these buildings we see the variation in American synagogue design for functional and aesthetic reasons. We also track the trajectory of popular styles throughout the 20th century and see how styles reflect changes in Jewish community organization and Jewish identity. Through synagogue design we see how Jews have viewed themselves and presented themselves to others. Different branches of Judaism and different budgets explain some changes. But so, too, do different eras, as the American Jewish experience has played out on Long Island and continues to develop and evolve.
