Описание: Building Human Centred Smart Cities in Developing Countries explores how to develop emergent smart cities explicitly rooted in humane, innovative, and sustainable values (CHIS). The work considers the move from technocratic and idealized smart metropole to humane cities as a product of fundamental demographic changes; the development of a usage-based rather than an ownership economy; the novel implications of digitalization, decentralization, and decarbonization; and Internet-enabled changes in public opinion towards democratization and participation. The authors explore seven dimensions and characteristics of humane, sustainable and innovative cities in the developing world: the economy, people, the place, energy and the environment, mobility, social inclusion and governance. The work explores the operationalization of the CHIS concept into formal planning, policy implementation, and impact assessment considerations. It closes by providing a roadmap for planners seeking to design development policies conducive to human values and long-term social viability.

Описание:
This volume provides the most current research on smart cities. Specifically, it focuses on the economic development and sustainability of smart cities and examines how to transform older industrial cities into sustainable smart cities. It aims to identify the role of the following elements in the creation and management of smart cities:
• Citizen participation and empowerment
• Value creation mechanisms
• Public administration
• Quality of life and sustainability
• Democracy
• ICT
• Private initiatives and entrepreneurship
Regardless of their size, all cities are ultimately agglomerations of people and institutions. Agglomeration economies make it possible to attain minimum efficiencies of scale in the organization and delivery of services. However, the economic benefits do not constitute the main advantage of a city. A city’s status rests on three dimensions: (1) political impetus, which is the result of citizens’ participation and the public administration’s agenda; (2) applications derived from technological advances (especially in ICT); and (3) cooperation between public and private initiatives in business development and entrepreneurship. These three dimensions determine which resources are necessary to create smart cities. But a smart city, ideal in the way it channels and resolves technological, social and economic-growth issues, requires many additional elements to function at a high-performance level, such as culture (an environment that empowers and engages citizens) and physical infrastructure designed to foster competition and collaboration, encourage new ideas and actions, and set the stage for new business creation.
Featuring contributions with models, tools and cases from around the world, this book will be a valuable resource for researchers, students, academics, professionals and policymakers interested in smart cities.
Описание: Bringing together contributions from internationally renown authors, such as Sir Peter Hall and Johann Jessen, this book addresses the parallel phenomena of growth and decline, focussing in particular, on urban fringe and rural areas.
In the last few decades, urban quality of life has received increasing interest from policy makers who aim to make cities better places to live. In addition to the aim of improving quality of life, sustainable and equitable development is also often included in the policy agendas of decision makers.
This book aims to link quality of life to related issues such as sustainability, equity, and subjective well-being. While less than one-third of the world's population lived in cities in 1950, about two thirds of humanity is expected to live in urban areas by 2030. This dramatic increase in the number of people living in urban areas serves as the backdrop for this book's analysis of cities.
This book will be useful to students and researchers in economics, architecture and urban planning, sociology and political sciences, as well as policy makers.
Описание: This book builds on the recent publications on cities and climate change, resilient cities and coasts, and sustainable cities, and looks at the ways in which current planning approaches will need to be adapted to embrace concepts including green growth, planetary boundaries, healthy cities and longer-term sustainability.

Описание: This book is a strongly reasoned call for greater reflexivity in policy making and program design efforts towards low carbon living, housing and communities. Using international case studies, this book will make a unique contribution to interdisciplinary urban studies, discourses and practices in an era of climate change.
