Описание: The study of earthquakes plays a key role in order to minimise human and material losses when they inevitably occur. Earthquake analysis or seismic analysis is a subset of structural analysis and is the calculation of the response of a building (or non-building) structure to earthquakes. This is required for carrying out the structural design, structural assessment and retrofitting of the structures in the regions where earthquakes are prevalent. Various seismic data are necessary to carry out the seismic analysis of the structures. These data are accessible into two ways viz. in deterministic form or in probabilistic form. Data in deterministic form are used for design of structures etc. whereas data in probabilistic form are used for seismic risk analysis, study of structure subjected to random vibration and damage assessment of structures under particular earthquake ground motion. Major seismic input includes ground acceleration/velocity/displacement data, magnitude of earthquake, peak ground parameters, duration etc. Earthquake engineering has developed a lot since the early days, and some of the more complex designs now use special earthquake protective elements either just in the foundation (base isolation) or distributed throughout the structure. Analysing these types of structures requires specialised explicit finite element computer code, which divides time into very small slices and models the actual physics, much like common video games often have "physics engines". Very large and complex buildings can be modeled in this way. This book offers statistical seismology studies, the latest techniques and advances on earthquake precursors and forecasting, along with, new methods for early detection, data acquisition and interpretation. This book does not emphasis on a unique problem in earthquake processes, but extents studies on historical earthquakes and seismology in diverse tectonic environments, to more applied studies on earthquake geology.

It is the scientific study of earthquakes and the propagation of elastic waves through the Earth or through other planet-like bodies. The field also includes studies of earthquake environmental effects, such as tsunamis as well as diverse seismic sources such as volcanic, tectonic, oceanic, atmospheric, and artificial processes. A seismic wave is energy that moves through the Earth as a result of an earthquake. Some seismic waves can be felt by the people on Earths surface and some cannot. Those that can be felt often cause damage and sometimes death. Seismologists use special instruments in their work called seismographs. These machines record seismic waves. They are usually capable of detecting and amplifying the slightest movements of the ground. Studying seismology generally involves two types of shock waves. There are push waves, which result when an inner Earth structure moves forward. Then, there are torsion waves, which result when particles are twisted between sliding inner structures. Accessing characteristics such as the time and speed of these waves can allow seismologists to gain valuable information such as the distance or severity of an earthquake. Seismology is also credited for giving people an accurate base of knowledge about the inner layers of the Earth. The mitigation of earthquake-related hazards represents a key role in the modern society. The mitigation of such kind of hazards spans from detailed studies on seismicity, evaluation of site effects, and seismo-induced landslides, tsunamis as well as and the design and analysis of structures to resist such actions. The study of earthquakes ties together science, technology and expertise in infrastructure and engineering in an effort to minimise human and material losses when they inevitably occur. Описание: Karst is a type of landscape, and also an aquifer type. Karst areas consist of solid but chemically soluble rock such as limestone (most important) and dolomite, but also gypsum, anhydrite and several other soluble rocks. It is characterised by underground drainage systems with sinkholes and caves. It has also been documented for weathering-resistant rocks, such as quartzite, given the right conditions. Subterranean drainage may limit surface water with few to no rivers or lakes. However, in regions where the dissolved bedrock is covered or confined by one or more superimposed non-soluble rock strata, distinctive karst surface developments might be totally missing. Karst aquifers are characterised by a network of conduits and caves formed by chemical dissolution, allowing for rapid and often turbulent water flow. Karst aquifers form by flowing water containing carbon dioxide which dissolves carbonate rocks. Therefore, there is a close relation between aquifer evolution, the formation of caves and groundwater flow. Hundreds of millions of people worldwide live in karst areas and are supplied by drinking water from karst aquifers. These aquifers include valuable freshwater resources, but are sometimes difficult to exploit and are almost always vulnerable to contamination, due to their specific hydrogeologic properties. Therefore, karst aquifers require increased protection and application of specific hydrogeologic methods for their investigation. Other problems frequently encountered in karst areas include: soil erosion and rock desertification, leakages of channels and reservoirs, collapse of underground cavities and formation of sinkholes, and flooding. Resolution of these problems requires involvement of karst hydrogeology experts. This book covers the topics understanding of cave and karst related processes and facilitates the translation of current discipline-specific research to an interdisciplinary readership by dealing with specific cave or karst systems. The book addresses a multi-disciplinary approach involved in anthropology, archaeology, biology, chemistry, geography, geology, geomorphology, hydrogeology, palaeontology, sedimentology, and all other disciplines related to speleology and karst terrains.
